Re-Sterilizing gear question?

What's the proper way of re-cooking gear to make sure it's sterile?

how did it lose sterility in the first place?

adding BA and baking it is pretty much the standard way to go...

A friend has a 20 ml vial and wants to transfer it to two 10 ml bottles. He bought some pre-sealed sterilized vials but wanted re-cook it to make sure it's sterile. What temp and how much time should it be baked?

In graduate school, our standard procedure for sterilizing lab glassware was dry heat (baking) 1-2 h at 350 degrees F. THIS IS ONLY RECOMMENDED FOR OIL-BASED GEAR as water based gear would boil at this temp. Shouldnt be a problem with oil-based gear. Allow to cool to room temp in oven, cooling too rapidly can cause glass to shatter. Also, remove labels from vial as they will burn at this temp. Boiling point of Benzyl alcohol is~400 so go no higher than 350.

350? This can't be. You're talking about sterelizing empty glassware. Not filled with juice right?

Doesen't anyone remember the Tren home brew craze from a few years back? I swear it was 160 or so. 350 just seems way high.

Anyone?

I know the glassware he bought was sterilized.

250 degrees for 20 - 30 min is typical. I like to preheat by letting it sit in a pot of water that I boiled first though (after taking the pot off the burner). This gets it up to 170 or so before sticking it into the oven.

This is what I've read for Tren. Check the melting points of the other gear as you don't want to exceed that temp. I think Test Prop's melting point is around 270. You can find this info in the chemistry forum.

Adding BA is your safest (but not the most pain free) option.
