Find a 60 gig on eBay if you want complete backwards compatibility. Otherwise the 80 gig has software emulation like the 360. The 40 gig doesn't have any at all. If you want the 40 gig and still want to play PS2 games, you'll need a PS2. If you don't have one, of course it'll be cheaper just to spring for an 80 gig or search around the interwebs for a 60 gig.

Seriously the only reason they released the 40 gig is to have a competitively low price point. I myself would avoid getting one as much as possible. If you want a PS3 I'd search for a 60 gig first. You could probably still find some new. Then go for an 80 gig as a last resort.
