Quick question about indoor vs. outdoor track & field

Do humans tend to run faster indoors vs. outdoors? I thought so but my man says you run faster outdoors. Not because of conditions but because outdoor events occur at the end of the season when runners are in the best shape.

I thought I rememeber talking to one of my buddies who ran track saying most guys are faster indoors.

Is that like your friend or more like your "good buddy"?

:D

both.

also skaman I am talking about shorter events like the 100m.

indoor tracks are always going to be faster. there is no wind resistance, the conditions can be controlled and made optimal since it is a man controlled environment. they temp can be set perfectly, so its ideal. If its too cold you will be running a 100m dash in the 12 second range, as vs a day when it is warm and your muscles can stay nice and warm and loose, whaen u will proably be running 11's range. not to say on a perfect day with no wind outside you cant PR because you can, ideal temp range fro a sprinter is 70-80 degreese. perhaps a bit cooler for distance runners.

Outdoor times are always faster. Indoor tracks are 200 yd or so per lap..most are less. so the turns are steaper and worse to run. Outdoor track are 400 meters per lap. times outdoors i would say for the most part are much faster than indoor times.

the stuff i posted was based on most Highschools. as for professional and collegiate, outdoors is still faster. look at the WR's and its easy to tell.. anyone who has run will tell you an outdoor track is most times faster.

It depends on the person really, outside you have the conditions, wind/rain/temp, but yes it is later in the season

indoor, controlled temp, but earlier in the season

wow I have heard some conflicting answers here.

again I am talking about straight line running only for one.

also yes most world records are held on outdoor meets but isn't that because most meets are held outdoors?

Yeah there are separate world records, what i meant was if you look at them both the Outdoor ones will be much faster..

yes I said that too but is that an artefact of the fact that there are so many more outdoor comps than indoor?

No i dont think its due to more competitors, i think its more due to the atmosphere. Outdoor tracks are just faster. That is why one athlete will run lets say in the 400 meter , 2-3 seconds faster outdoors. Partly it may be attributed to most track athletes training through the indoor season so possibly they may be in better shape come the outdoor season.

Unitards ( one piece singlet/shorts) are the absolute fastest. its clinically proven. 4 out of 5 runners approve;) :D :fro:

okay well, i have been running the 100m dash for 4 years now in highschool, I have been to numerous invites all over washington state, east to south, im in the far NW, ive been to an indoor track before where they had a track running around the outside, then they had 6 lanes running down the middle which went through the outside curves of the track, it hard to explain without seeing a picture, i ran an 11.4 there, fastest ive ever done outside is 11.6
