Maybe it's because of the overhead view and the angle of the lighting. Usually when I look in the mirror there is light above me. But when you lean over with your head over your abs the light is blocked out.

I am the opposite, I see a very good 6 pack when I look down and when I look in the mirror it is hardly there, that's why I always wonder if I am just making it up or if other people can actually see my abs ....

Have you ever considered accentuating them with a marker? Just take a sharpie and draw around each little section when you're looking in the mirror. Then when you look down you'll see them all.
