WHAT THE FUCK

are people thinking when they hold dumbbells at their sides, and then sort of strain to raise the DBs in such a way that it looks like a quarter rep of some bastard child of an unholy union of upright rows, lateral raises and calf raises?

I *think* they think they are doing shrugs.

I also think they they either a) dont' realize that shrugs are for traps, or b) think they are actually somehow hitting their traps

I seriously want to call someone on it. Especially since I am not particularly strong, but can rep the 60s for like sets of 30, but these guys are using this horrible form for like sets of 8 with like 40#.

Weak and they are trying to be strong

For some people the weight moved means more than than effect on the muscle.

i thought that 2, back in the day

My traps only grow with heavy fucking weight and low reps.
So I go heavy, low reps with the cambered bar in the cage, then hit high reps with the dumbells. Then follow up with the 4 way neck. Not to tute my own horn, but I have some nice traps :D
My form isn't 100% perfect in the cage. Slight body english on 2 reps maybe. I work traps after back on back day.

dumbell shrugs are all about the squeeze at the top and letting the weight stretch out your traps at the bottom...I never have to go higher than 70lbs because of how hard I contract and stretch the muscle on each rep.

try to see if i can squish my own head with my shoulders on each rep to get maximum range of motion.

I seriously find more humor in the guy staring in disgust and thinking to himself the ol' boys on my chatroom are gonna get a good laugh tonight tee hee

Not nearly as bad as the fucktards that roll their shoulders......it hurts just to watch. There's one fat bastard at my gym that does the "roll technique" with 495 on the bar........OUCH.

Lucky me, I don't even train my traps directly, they grow from deadlifts. :)

Give power shrugs a whirl: high weight and high reps with lots of body english.

I like the feeling of shrugs and the massive weight I can do.

you know where it's like your arms are dead from the shoulders down. it just feels cool.

it does NOT feel cool to use your biceps. not to mention your traps are probably stronger than your biceps, delts, and calves combined!
