Question for the Computer guys

Hey fellas,

Here within the past week or so, my laptop has been doing something weird. Every now and then, regardless of how many programs are running, the computer will just shut off. As it shuts off, it sounds like the fan slowly comes to a stop. Is this a virus, is my laptop getting too hot? Karma to all those with suggestions or comments. Thanks guys!!!

The fan stops BEFORE unexpected shutoff? Like it's dying or binding against the shroud?

If so, it's probably a sensor on the motherboard that kills power before you fry something. Most laptops have them. Feel the underside of your laptop. If it's hot enough that you wouldn't want it in your lap, chances are thats it.

Could also be a power supply problem. what brand , model of laptop do you have there are a few out there that are known to have PSU problem either in the PSU itself or in the cord.

it doesnt shut off before, its stops as the screen goes off and you can hear it go slowly away afterwards

its a dell... could that have something to do with it?..lol

That hasn't been true for probably 4 years now. The reason they call them notebooks now is that with the increasing amount of power they areputting in them, they can no longer be considered laptops due to the heat being generating by them. I used to do tech support for Dell so I remember many calls from customers complaining about the heat and I had to explain this to them

Anways, is the entire computer powering down or is it going into hibernation? If it's actually shutting off, if could be a number of issue. The motherboard could be failing at the power source, bad memory, could still be a heat issue though.

If you have a support contract, I'd call up Dell and see what they say if you are good at understanding Indian accents :p
