question for keto guys

Transporter

New member
i am on keto right now. guys i work a lot and it is easiest for me is to take a protein shake.
My protein shake has about 3 grams of carbs per serving. I take 5
shakes per day : thats about 15 grams of carbs. How bad is it?

for fat i take 2 big flax seed oil pills every 2-3 hours.

And i take some steamed vegetables for fiber. (thats extra carbs)

My question to you guys: am i doing wrong? will those 15 -20 grams of carbs bring me out of ketosis?

thanks!

Crum diet it's not a keto diet.
In Crum's diet i don't see harm on that amount of carbs.
I would take flax seed oil instead of pills...

Yes, this is a problematic situation because you are having too much protein, which converts, if in abundance, to glucose. Especially if you are trying to hit Ketosis, this would not be beneficial. However, the "2 big flax seed oil pills" I am sure do not contain more then 10g of flaxseed oil; thus, you need to take liquid flaxseed. (and a lot more of it).

Generally, it looks as if you are not ready for a ketonic diet, maybe you should reconsider and stick to highprotein/low carbs.

Unfortunately, easy isn't always best. Plus, you're missing out on the thermogenic nature of whole foods - your body has to work harder to digest a chicken breast than it does to digest whey protein. Why don't you try limiting yourself to 1-2 protein shakes and get the rest of your protein from whole food sources? Chicken, turkey, eggs, and london broil are my favs.

Ok, I'm confused. I thought high protein/low carbs. WAS a ketogenic diet.

What is the difference.

I eat low carbs and a lot of protein, and I stay in a fairly mild state of ketosis (according to ketostix).

Please help me out here. I've tried to read up on this, but I seem to get conflicting info.

The word "ketogenic" simply refers to a physiological state where your body is producing ketones to some degree. Consume under 100 grams of carbs per day, and you technically WILL be producing some ketones.

What most people mean when they say ketogenic is a dietary regimen consisting of no carbs, moderate to high fat, and moderate protein.

Ok, well I get about 10-40 grams of carbs / day (usually about 15)

Moderate Fat

High Protein.....

...... is this less efficient at burning fat than moderate Protein and high Fat?

RAnch dressing, sausage, and fat free cool whip that i buy all contain 1g worth of carbs per serving, will this throw me out of ketosis?

If you are trying to be in a Ketogenic phase then YES high protein is less efficient then high fat.

For best results in ketosis, you need HIGH FAT/LOW! carbs/mod. protein

Protein can convert to glycogen at 58% and fat only at 10%.

When its all said and done the fat lost on keto vs non-keto is almost the same. If your losing fat and keeping muscle, dont stress about ketosis.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

I guess I just need to read up on this some more. Any good resources? (for some reason I can't log into www.mesomorph.com)

BTW, I'm taking "supplements"..... so that's why I thought it best to get lots of protein. (cutting cycle)

You do not need to be in ketosis to burn fat ( although I do wonder that any type of burning fat is ketosis, even if you are not burning fat ALL the time )

Anyways, I do a low-carb ( not extremely low, if I eat too many carbs, which I hardly do except on a carb-up ) I just do more cardio, so anyway, I do low-carb, high protein, low to moderate fat and I've gone down from 300 lbs to 195 with a nice muscle tone, and I'm going to go down even further because I just found out why I stalled ( I never refeed and my year plus of low carb dieting without refeeding has lowered my leptin so much )

bottom line, don't STRESS over carbs, get a good list together of low carb foods, I find splenda and splenda flavored drinks to be a great help, diet soda, low fat creams you can flavor with 0 sugar syrups and splenda .. there's a host of things you can use that are filling and low in carbs and not even too high in fat. My breakfast consists of turkey bacon, egg beaters, protein muffins or pancakes or sometimes flax seed meal .. almost no fat there and very low carbs, although I do think adding some sausage there would make me feel more full.

anyways don't stress.

You want to burn fat? Get some lighter fluid and a match.

(BTW, that was totally not directed at you, mojokid. More general exasperation.)

Unless one has just eaten a high carb or high fat meal, typically one will be burning about 50% glucose and 50% FFA at rest. This whole notion of a "fat burning" zone is bullshit - people get so hung up on macronutrients, they forget the big picture. Ketogenic diets may shift the fuel milieu a bit towards FFA oxidation, but ultimately, until there's a drug that rewrites the laws of thermodynamics, fat loss or gain comes down to calories.

You said It!
Lots of people have a vague understand of ketosis and bank burning fat ONLY on being in ketosis. A better understand of how the body works with food would be in order. Your body is just one big game and it's a really great feeling to know exactly what to do to get to where you want to be, to know how to play your body.
