Question for computer experts

Here's the problem:

Not too long ago I had to restore my laptop. The OS is Microsoft XP Home Edition. Everything is back to normal and all the settings are the way I had them, the only problem is it is not connecting to the internet.

I have a cable connection. I went to into device manager and the network card is detected and enabled. I went into my network connections and everything is setup properly. What is the problem???

go to the Start menu, then go to "Run"

In there, type "ipconfig" and tell us what comes up

also, touch your ass and describe what it feels like

I typed ipconfig, the command prompt window pops up and then goes away quickly... I try more times but it wont stay up.

As far as my ass goes, there's a big pimple on it from my current cycle!

Okay, this is going well so far.

Open the run command thing, type in "cmd"

That will open up a command terminal.

In there type out "ipconfig" and if you don't want to put up your IP address, that is fine - but when it comes up - if there is an error message, no listing of your IP address, or if it starts with 169 - then let us know.

you can also type in "ping www.yahoo.com"

does that do anything?

then type in "ipconfig /release" and then "ipconfig /renew" and THEN again try "ping www.yahoo.com" - does that then do anything?

If your settings are correct, then doing that should talk to your DHCP service and pull you down a new IP to use and then you should be able to get all funky with your own bad self.

Also - just for good measure - there IS an ethernet cable into the machine that connects to either the cable modem or a router that splits up the lines into multiple lines?
