what's the designation numbers, e.g, 2.1 or 5.1 mean before speakers?

I'm considering a pair of powered monitors that are 8.1

I thought that after looking at multi-media speaker systems, but in this case it's just a pair of powered monitors and it's rated 8.1

JM is right, the numbers denote a surround sound system, where the first number is the number of speakers, and the second digit is the number of subwoofers (usually 1).

Perhaps what you saw was only part of a complete system?

Again ... I don't think it's simply a ratio of satelites to sub.

Oh, duh, that link...

In this case, 8.1 isn't a spec, it's the friggin' NAME OF THE PRODUCT. The Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.1. I guess it's a slight improvement over the previous model, the Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.0.

So, this whole thread is sort of asking, like, "what does MX-5 mean?" It's the name of a friggin' car, the "Mazda MX-5 Miata".
