Is it common to be able to buy generics of different meds down there. Every time I ask for something they try to give me the real stuff. I want the generics, but they never seem to have it. Is this common, or are they trying to screw me?

ask for it by name. i just got back from a little trip to mex and had no problem. drove right across the bridge. i did have to go price the gear out to get the best deal. i think all the prices went up in mex pharmacies. i still only paid 7 bucks a vial.
i just asked them to show me what they got for test or any other anabolic they got. but they all carry sustanon, deca, primotest, and testoprim-d, along with nolva and omifin (clomid)
Doubt on generics? Ask to consult the Mexican PDR in any farmacia.
The book might be dated -- usually a 2000 edition. But most of the information is the same. The yellow section at the front will be the most helpful in choosing meds.
Another point. Most "pharmacists" in Mexico are nothing other than clerks. No license is necessary. Don't expect too much.
