Question about HIT

On a 30/30/40 fat loss diet, are 2 20 minute HIT sessions a day, 4-5 days a week to much from a muscle preservation/building standpoint?

Regarding the HIT ideas, there are a bunch of different theories which have evolved from Mike Metzner's plan. But to answer your question I guess you should be more specific like what those 2-20 minute sessions would include etc. But even with that information I could only speculate on the results.

The main thing I've been doing has been working out on a punching bag. Every so often I'll run, but I'd rather work out on the bag than running. I start off rather light and get lose for about 5 minutes, then I step it up for the next 5. After that I back off again (5 minutes) then really lay into the last segment.

Usually NOT on an empty stomach BTW. I'm doing 20 minutes in the morning and 20 in the evening.

Oops, yes, I'm talking about intensive high empact cardio, not weight training.

Sorry I didn't catch my typo.

I would say so, yes. If you trying to build muscle, a good diet and a quality HIIT every other day should be enough in my opinion. I would increase the length of the HIIT every week though.

By the way, how does your typical HIIT go?

Well, I usually do a some pushups and a couple of stretching exercises to get loose. After that I spend the first 5 getting warmed up just hitting the bag pretty softly.

During the next 5 minutes I increase my speed and strength used to go wailing on that thing. The 3rd set of 5 minutes I spend hitting the bag with the speed and repetition that is inbetween the first and second sessions.

The last 5 minutes I pretty much go to town like Rocky fighting Mr. T. By the time I'm done I can feel it in my arms, my shoulders, upper back and my sides.

That's a great idea for a HIIT workout! I've done it on the stationary bike, running in place and with a jump rope, but never with the heavy bag, although I like to hit the heavy bag.

I will try that myself, but I will go with 1 minute intervals. I don't think I can keep up any real intensity for a full 5 minutes.

Well, that last 5 minutes definately isn't "full" intensity or anything like that. Its more like an exhaustive session. If I don't have to walk around the house for a few minutes afterwards to keep my sides from cramping it just doesn't feel good to me.

Its the only type of working out that I really enjoy. I don't know if its because it makes me feel like a bad a$$ ;) or what. All I know is that I have no problems doing it twice a day. Its hard not to go wailing on the bag.

Exercise is a HUGE weak point in my life (my waist shows it :D ) so I get pumped when I find something I like.
