Question about cardion in the a.m.

Question about cardio in the a.m.

On my cardio days I typically eat 6 egg whites at around 6.15am, and then do my cardio at 9.15am.

I know everyone always says do your cardio on an empty stomach, but the fact that I eat just pure protein and then train three hours later, is this okay?

IMO, pure protein eaten by itself is a waste of food. I would throw in at least 1 yolk or some other type of fat.

It shouldn't matter with cardio unless you're lifting at the same time. But why are you waiting 3 hours after you wake up to do cardio on an empty stomach?

I'd say it's better to do the cardio on an empty tyummy, regardless of where the calories are coming from, and eating once you get home. Though if you're eating 3 or so hours before doing your cardio your tummy should be pretty empty anyhow. Could you possibly go to the gym at 6:15 instead of 9:15 and eat right afterwards? I know it's hard to get there early like that but it's also nice to have it done with.

I've got a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old so I couldn't leave the house at that time to go to the gym. Guess I'll have to figure something else out

Like Ashley said, I would eat 5 egg whites and 1 whole egg. You could even eat a little carb - like veggies mixed in with the eggs.

If you don't eat anything else the rest of the morning, your tummy should be quite empty for the cardio at 9ish.

^^ What Daisy said. Again the point of living a healthy fit lifestyle is to live one that fits the rest of your life. Just eggs woudl've easily been processed within 3 hrs.

I know mine isn't the popular opinion, but I say do your cardio when you have time to & when you can actually do it...... I'm NOT a morning person & don't like doing cardio in the morning & don't put the effort into it when I do.....

But definitely have some fat in with your first meal, such as 1 yolk, little olive oil, etc....

so why is it ok to have Protein + fats? and not just protein???
and other then the food before cardio, how about protein in general? so what you are all saying is even when I have my P.Shakes I should ALWAYS add a fat?

I don't know the answer, but I read somewhere on the board that you shouldn't have a carb & fat together....I'm confused too

Protein + fat = slow absorption of the protein by the body

Protein alone = Rapid absorption of the protein by the body

Thus, after working out, you want protein alone so it's absorbed quickly to replenish the glycogen used up during the workout....

You want protein + fat before bed so the protein is absorbed more slowly while you sleep to prevent catabolism....

6 egg whites is hardly anything. Only about 100 calories. You need more calories than this for breakfast. IMO, you should aim from 250-300 calories for breakfast.

Add some oats, or veggies, or yolks to the mix.

IMO, it would be better to do your cardio immediately upon waking then how you are doing it right now. That said, i'm not a big fan of AM cardio. I do think its best for fat loss, but I loose to much muscle while doing AM cardio. I always do my cardio after weights.

It depends on your goal

If you cut and don't care losing a bit of lean body mass then it's (quite) OK, otherwise you may want to eat a bit more

Amen. I do cardio, oh - around noonish. :)

OK - sometimes I do it right away in the morning, but not very often. I'll usually have braksfats and then wait a couple of hours before cardio. Or I'll do it after weight training. Or whenever I find the time. Basically.

Post workout - CARBS AND PROTEIN

Breakfast - typically no fats

cardio - depends on time frame.....typically carbs protein - no fat

Y'all are making this too complicated.

ONLY eat fat specifically if there is a long peroid between meals....

Someone around here told me..... forget who now....

But after a workout I was told it's best to drink a protein shake, no fats....

But it should be: protein + carb - no fat after a workout??

I have always said a whey/carb(malto) is BEST postworkout.

the carb source is an endless debate though

I know really.....

Well, my protein powder has 2g carb per serving, so I guess that would count as carbs post-workout.....

yeah.....not enough......if you look at my food log..Im always mixing in non-fat milk

..its splitting hairs...MALTO is superior for gaining mass.....for cutting..Im not sure that it REALLy matters

Shadow - you are my hero and what you say is the bible as far as I'm concerned, of course - I appreciate all you ladies input too, but I've decided to do cardio first thing in the morning before eating, and then have my egg white pancake with oatmeal afterwards. I then do weights usually about two hours later then have my whey protein shake with an apple right after that.

Thanks Shadow, you're right I do tend to over analyze sometimes, my brother is always telling me that, just stick to a simple diet with clean protein, fat when needed at appropriate times and carbs when appropriate, which I have a total understanding of now.

Thanks again.

Well...first off

I think what you propose is fine...just limit the fat intake in the pancake and it looks good...

Thank You.

I thought you said earlier in this thread that first AM cardio was not an option due to your children?

I'm confused - because the advice you got freom several people was to do cardio before eating, but you said you couldn't do this. Then, the advice you received was tailored to fit this supposed schedule........

Ditto....

This bothers me a lot... "Shadow - you are my hero and what you say is the bible as far as I'm concerned, of course - I appreciate all you ladies input too, but I've decided to do cardio first thing in the morning before eating, and then have my egg white pancake with oatmeal afterwards."

Shadow is very intelligent and very knowledgable... I love having him on this board (as I'm sure everyone else is)... but it seems that everything that was said here was disregarded until Shadow responded... Raina, Daisy, Sassy, and jenscats gave you some great advice and they're extremely intelligent women. IMO, it's rude to turn one person into "the God" here. If you don't care to hear what the rest of the women have to say, discuss your problems in PM.

I dont think its that......but I do think your response might better suited for pms

I think y'all are missing the thrust of her point...

if you look....I did not offer any advice on the question at all.

Her decision to listen to the masses couldnt have had anything to do with me as I didnt address the point at all.

I think it was the timing more than anything else.....

I'm truly sorry if you ladies misinterpreted what I said. I listened to all of your advice, and weighed up everything and just decided to go with Shadow's advice, as he kind of reminds me of some of the stuff my brother (who also is a bodybuilder) has said to me. I'm so sorry if you think that was rude, it wasn't meant to be that way.

I won't be able to leave the house to go to the gym, that hasn't changed as yes, I do have two small kids, but my husband had told me that this morning we were going to get a treadmill, so therefore I can do my cardio first thing now.

I admire all of you ladies very much, however, in the short time I've been reading these forums, I find Shadow's advice to be right on the money each and every time.

Also when Shadow mentioned that I would double my fat burning doing cardio first, that ultimately made up my mind as I have quite a lot of fat to lose.

I was gonna post something to that end.

Congrats on the treadmill in your future -- this makes life hella bunch easier!

The only point I wanted to make was that in all of this advice it is terribly confusing to figure out how to approach things, however no one is goign to get the ultimate diet / training here - each thing needs to be tweaked to work for each individual person's life & lifestyle. The best way to do that is to throw a stake in the ground on a basic program (emphasis on BASIC... keep it SIMPLE!), try it for a while and make adjustments as challenges present themselves. My goal in all of this is to add more and more tools to my 'bag of tricks' so I can build my own base of understanding and make my own adjustments along the way.

Edumacate me baby!

Sassy, thank you so much for your amazing words, you are a huge inspiration to me too. I definitely struggle with the whole concept of eating good and training smart. However, I've learnt so much from so many great people, and like you say every individual needs different things, so I'm starting with the basic food and will tweak it as necessary the way you have suggested, and the way many others in my life have suggested.

I feel lucky to have found this forum and met so many great people, I aspire to be as disciplined and as beautiful as most of the ladies on this board.

My brother is extremely disciplined and is a great motivation to me, as well as my husband who is a former professional kickboxer, so I'm surrounded by athletes. I have trained hard actually for many years, but my biggest problem has always been my diet, as I'm a chocoholic and love my whisky, not a good combination :) But I've been eating clean for some time now, and am starting to see some results.

Thanks again though Sassy for your great advice.

By the way I was thinking of starting a journal as of next week, as I'm training with a personal trainer for a four week intensive program, is it okay to put my journal on here even though I'm not a platinum member?

Of course it is okay! You can just start a thread with your name in it - like so many people have. Just do the updates in there as often as you want! :)

I know I check out the "individual" threads every couple days - they are fun to read through, motivating, and we ALL can learn something from someone else! :)

Good luck!

You must spread your karma around before you can give it to shadow again.

Hey Lynnette -- congrats on the treadmill!! That will make things easier for you I hope..... pick a program that suits your needs & one you can stick with!!

Hope to see your journal soon....
