Putting a website online... (question)

Ok, I think the first step is to check and see if the domain name (www.xxxxxxx.xxx) you want to use is availalbe.

How do I do that?

The next step is to find a service that will give you the space you need to upload your website.

Which one is the best?

Once you purchase space from them.... then what? They give you a little program sort of like Yahoo! that you can use to upload all your webpages? How does it work?

I am experimenting now and the little test website is very small.

Mega karma slam to everyone who replies. (with useful info)

www.networksolutions.com

That is where you find out about it.

You can use cuteftp to upload your files to the various directorys of your website.

You'll probably need a host. There are soem that do it for free, but put a banner advertising shit on your site... bizland.com has some options... if you pay so much a month, you can get the ad free hosting.

cditty is correct, networksolutions is the place to go, u can check by simply entering a name or by doing a whois. Then when you need to have it hosted u find a company who does this and take into consideration the amount of traffic you anticipate, the amount of size you will need and the number of email accounts and other fun things you want added in. If you are looking for low cost i suggest www.webmasters.com they provide a good bang for the buck option. Generally they will have a either a login feature on there site to manager your own, or like said before u can use an FTP program to login and upload your files to the proper directories.

Domain name (see above) or http://www.whois.org/
Hosting Service( see above )

Web site design: usually the hosting service offers this.
So much $ by the hour or by what you want.. complexity of the site features etc.

There are "Do it yourself" capabilities some hosting services offer,
but something tells me that won't be sufficient for you AAP..

I already have the pages designed and everything. All linked together and such.

I don't want to use a generic upload program. I want to upload it just like it is.

Also out of the 8 pages I am going to upload and test... how do I specify which one is going to be the "home page" that the www. addy hits when someone types it in?

I used Dreamweaver and have all the pages on my hard drive. Now I want to get them off my hard drive and on the web so I can have others to hit them and play around with it.

all u need to do is get a host....dreamweaver has the option of exporting to the web....

So I just export the HTML (index) file and it drags everything else along with it?

Or do it one by one?

you don't need cuteftp

just open up internet explorer and type ftp:// instead of http://

internet explorer has had an ftp program in it for a LONG time. ftp program marketer's get the majority of people to buy them by suckering you into thinking you don't already have an ftp option that is free. you only need an ftp program if you really want a status meter or scheduled transfer or whatnot...

for purpoting your bias as anything other than opinion. for purporting that ie ftp was not up to the task of transfering an 8 page site.

honestly, i dont believe it is... i have had numerous occasions in which simply connecting to an ftp site thru IE was not possible *not responding, cant make a connection, etc*, yet thru bulletproof ftp, or cuteftp it was simple.... so please sling your love for IE FTP someplace else.

Funny... I was just thinking the same thing regarding your banal anti-microsoft bs...

You could also check out stargate www.stargateinc.com

They have hosting and email boxes with your domain id. They have an ftp upload for the web pages as well. Very simple, frontpage compatible....

Very easy to update.

One Question.... Do you have a static IP address? If so, you do not need a host, you can publish right from your PC.

anyway...good luck. Its very easy once you decide these basic issues. It sounds like you already have the hard part done...

Oh yeah...don't use IE's ftp protocol. Its not good...

Use cuteftp, or any other one. Tons of ftp programs on tucows to download for free.....

I have everything in a folder "htdocs", open the ftp site & simply drag & drop the htdocs folder to the ftp site.

btw, simply using explorer for ftp works fine for me & my site has about 50 different pages.

Stargateinc.com is a decent domain registrar where you can buy a domain and also check for availability. DO NOT go with network solutions, they are expensive and incompetant.

3-95.com is a good webhost. They're super cheap, good uptime, decent support and you get good features for the price (3.95), plus Gary the owner is a great guy. Everyone will recommend a different host who is "the best". Just look through who people are recommending and find what suits you best. Do NOT go with anyone who claims "unlimited". Unlimited means they'll drop you or move you up to the next higher plan if you exceed a certain amout. Also check out www.webhostingtalk.com for tons of cheap webhosts.

The standard procedure for uploading websites is to use ftp. Any ftp client will work, cuteftp, and wsftp are popular ones. Dreamweaver may have auto upload features, I'm not sure.

jesus fucking christ.

I recommend you set up a server array and an oracle database. Then, make sure to get a fucking t1 line and raided drives, too.

hahaha.....this web site better be damn good considering it's been how many months????

You shoulda jumped in on the shell deal I told you about....because we are working on getting LL Bean to merge into it...they want to go public and this is the cheapest and quickest way.

Your return on investment would have been mindblowing....and your web days over....;)

"That" website is finished... I am just waiting for the second batch of pics to come in. I got very sick and missed out on the second photography session. My friend is booked up until mid april now.
