'Puter Peeps: new windows system in 2007?

one of the IT guys at work advised me to wait until after the first of the year to buy a new computer; as a new windows system is coming out that will (in theory, anyway) address all the security issues that the current windows system has?

ya'll heard this??

yeah the new system is called Vista. Waiting a year is a good idea if not you'll be downloading patches every friggin' day.

Yes - Vista.

It won't be released to the general public until the first of the year, if we're lucky.

It's been rewritten from the ground up, supposedly, and they have invited a bunch of hackers to try and break the system. Given that it's the most prominent OS, expect it to be broken and flaws to be found. Nothing is perfect.

If you want to wait until March/April to buy a system, you can, but I don't expect it will really be worth the wait. If you've got a router/firewall that's halfway decent, the vulnerabilities aren't so much of an issue. They're more of a problem for companies, whose information has more value than an individual.

like more valuable than porn?

I'm guessing it will be here by late 2007.

Just get a good CPU, 80+ gigs of HD space, 1+ gig of memory, and a 3d graphics acceleration card (Vista uses 3d accelerators in its new UI). And prefereably get a video card like a 7900 that doesn't share memory with the system (get the memory on the card).

You'll then be set with XP for now and can upgrade to Vista when it ships.

will vista avoid the viruses/trojan horses/adware/whatever that seems to plaque windows? all the spyware needed nowdays is a painus in the anus to load and keep updated, slows down the response time.

peeps with macs don't seem to have these problems.

A good virus scanner like norton along with good computer hygene should hold you over until Vista. Just be careful because it's all the "sekret" viruses that get the bad press but most adware/malware comes from content users willing download from Internet Explorer. Know all that "totally free" porn that you simply have to download their "tools" to view? Well, their "tools" are typically adware/spyware stuff :)

Macs don't have as many of these problems because there are less mac desktops hence a smaller target for virus writers. If you really want to be safe, download Linux and use that :)

Yep - people create most of their own computer problems by clicking okay.

Vista won't fix that.

Obscurity = security :rolleyes:

Vista will address current security issues and introduce a whole new set of problems. Don't base your decision to buy/wait on security. As TheProduct said most problems are negated with a decent firewall/AV scanner/spyware app and common sense. I have not had a virus cause any home damage since the days of Windows 3.1.
I would advise non-computer savvy people to wait for Vista simply because they won't feel comfy upgrading to it themselves later on, so it will save them some work later on. Having said that, Windows XP is generally quite good and you can't really go wrong either way.
