pullups vs chins...?

DZLS

New member
i'm doing these in my 5x5 on the Wednesday workout, and was wondering what is best for packing on mass...

i was considering doing a shoulder with reversed grip...

any other suggestions...?

i'll be doing 3 sets of 5, so maybe i should do 3 different grips...? or concentrate on one only...?

I have always been told chins are a better mass builder shoulder width apart, i od those and I feel fiesty i pump it out on the pulldowns

i've never really done this type of grip, so i will give them a shot, and see how i progress with them...

thanks for the insight...

u mean palms facing you? I do them palms facing out, with straps I dont need them to hold the bar just to really get a good stretch and pull from my lats

I used to do volume training with pullups and would rotate between three diffrent grips every set. That way I would hit all the different areas of the muscle.

Or...

Try doing one grip per workout. Over hand wide this week, underhand narrow next, etc. etc.

I second the guy above me...

When I chin, I'll alternate palms facing out, and palms in to hit different angles.

Rather than divide up your energy between pullups & chinups, why not work on one, add weight to it over time, and get stronger that way. The movements are almost the exact fucking same, there's no reason to be switching grips. Training one will bring up the other.

Antrax, you don't notice a pull in different areas of the back/arms when you switch your grips from a wider, palms-out grip to a closer palms-in one? I don't know about you, but I certainly feel that palms in recruits more of the bicepts than a wider grip.

sure, with regards to bicep involvement, you definitely fry your biceps with chins (palms toward you), but what AI is saying is calm down on the overthinking of grip widths, hand spacing/hand positions. ultimately a pulldown is a pullup is a chinup. the upper arm movement in relation to the torso under challenging load is what matters.

Same thing with me, i only do 1 type, if i do mix it up its probbably because i feel i got too strong, so thats when i would mix it up.

Bignate got it. The bicep recruitment is the main thing that changes. Just because your arms are coming into play more doesn't mean you're recruiting your back any less. You can lift more weight with chinups rather than pullups. This is due to the biceps having an optimal line of pull, allowing them to attribute the most strength to the movement. Greater loads lifted equates to greater size achieved.

this is what i decided to do... shoulder width palms facing me...

i underestimated my strength for 5 reps this week... at least i know where to go from here...

thanks for the input from everyone...

wierd i geuss.. but i can do more weight with a pull up (palms out) versus a chin.... i geuss i have been doing pullups for so long without doing any chins im uncomfortable with em..

i only use chin ups wheni notice my bis might be lacking, and use the chinup as an added bi stimulus

Likely a neural thing. Start doing chins and you'll surpass your pullup weights. There's no reason you should be doing more with pullups other than slight neural adaptations. Why? 'cause more musculature is used and has better lines of pull with chinups.

pull ups are far more effective.

You have always been, and always will be, an idiot. Shut up and stick to C&C. You say things without any basis. I doubt there's even empirical evidence to backup what you say.

I'm a 19 year old highschool dropout working as a supervisor for UPS and getting a free ride to college on them, majoring in business, minor in accounting, and I've been stuck on training & these boards since I was, what, 14? Yeah. After being around for so long, I've picked up a lot. I took to it easily.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I was also - Legion Kreinak, Legion Kreinak2 (who would've guessed!?), Tom Treutlein, BFS Trooper, and probably some other skewed names on this forum, but they all got banned 'cause I'm an asshole. :) And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Not to mention SugarPlum & wnt2bbeast were my BEST friends. :FRlol:

Nah not cool, stay in school.

Or don't, have connections, get into a great paying job that puts you through college and gives you 100% medical, dental and vision benefits, and set the stage for the rest of your life - while spending about 200 actual days in highschool out of about four years.

Got a small question on chinup form. Whenever I do chinups(which I thought were pullups thanks for the clarification guys) my legs sort of swings out in front of me, so it looks like I'm pulling at an angle rather than pulling myself straight up. I've tried crossing my legs behind me but still get that swinging sort of motion. Is my form complete screwed ? Should I try instead pullups to get better form ? I've been trying to work up to 5x5 chinups but its more likely 5,5,4,3,3.

It's not a big deal. Don't worry about it. Just don't "kip-up" by kicking your legs to gain upward momentum.
