Protein sludge

How long does it take for a tub of protein powder to go bad after you open it? I notice that the 6 lb. tubs have a pretty long exp date. What actually happens to the protein when it goes bad?

I've heard this shit is like asbestos. But if it's over or near expiration I'll toss it. It's bad enough I get the protein trots, I don't invite them!
