protein question

We only absorb a certain amount of protein each sitting...around 30g's i believe...now, my question is, if i take in a 55g protein shake, is the excess stored and used later???

And for an example, lets say im supposed to take in 200g's of protein...can i count all of this 55g's to that? or can I only count what is actually used...ex: around 30gs per sitting.

I would like to think that if i take in a 50g protein shake post workout, and 50g shake before bed that i have gotten 100g's from this? am I okay to do that? or should I only say 60?

everyone is different. the 30g thing is perpetuated alot but cant be nailed down to everyone.

everyone carries a certain amount of amino acids in their "pool", but no unused protein wont be stored and broken out later. its either used for immediate purposes, replenishing the amino acid pool, once that is complete either converted to fat or glucose.

this is the reason why its necessary to keep your nitrogen balance high, or maintain a steady protein intake. its to meet the demands your body has for repair and recovery, as well as energy demands.

the actual absorption/assimilation of nutrients window isnt that long. thats why regular eating is a must.

i have read..... i think on T-mag.... that that 30 g max absorbtion is a myth. The article also said that the more protein you eat, the less important the quality of it is.

I switched from premixed drinks to powder...i can take 40 g at a time and not crap it out...so, i must be absorbing it i rekon...

I am not sure if there is any emperical evidence on this.

I have heard 30 grams, but I believe that everyones body chemistry is different.

Therefore, we all have various absorption rates.

most studies will tell you that an AVERAGE body can take in about 50grs of protein per serving...

however if you weigh 350 you will obviosly be able to take in more and use it better... the best way to follow it is to try to take in about 1gr of protein per pound of lean mass and to break it up into 4-6 serving throughout the day...

I'm sure there are many factors which determine how much protein your body needs at different times, and how quickly it utilizes it. For example, body composition (height, weight), I'm sure genetics play a role somewhere, how much the tissue needs to be repaired (i.e., did you workout recently and are the muscles still recuperating?), how much muscle you have in general...

Extra protein is not stored. I believe excess is flushed out through urine and feces. I'm not sure about it storing as fat or glucose... I've never heard that before.

Assuming the body can only absorb 30 grams per serving, then how long does it take before the body is ready to absorb again? I really don't think it's something to concern yourself with. We've seen people eating 6-8 meals daily, whey protein post-workout and eating generally healthy with at LEAST 1gP/lb-BW. Now... have they made gains? Do they look good? Yes? Then don't question it. This isn't the Age of Enlightenment.

I leave the discovering up to scientists and other people who want to waste their time. I'm perfectly content with gains being made now with the guidelines I follow.

well, one of my questions was why would someone take a 60-75g protein shake if most of it was not used? and if that person needed 200gs of protein for the day, would you count 75 towards that? or the amount used (like 50)?

You'll never really be able to figure out the amount being used anyway. Your best bet would be to just get more than you need. Better safe than sorry. And since we can't figure out how much is being absorbed, if I'm going to eat 2gP/lb-BW then I'd be looking at 360 grams or so -- and everything I eat totals towards that. It's simple, don't complicate it.

whos complicating it? I'm just asking a question...if you dont have an answer, you dont have to reply to it.

excess definatly isn't flushed out, its stored. Or else everyone could eat insane amounts of protein, way more than what theyre bodies needed, but just to be safe, and would never have to worry about getting fat. diet board bro diet board

excess definatly isn't flushed out, its stored

I'm sorry, you're right. Protein is still, in its most basic form, calories. And excess calories are stored. What I was getting at is, you cannot eat extra protein and have it stored for later use. It will no longer be useful for repairing muscle tissue.

Because it's not completely proven that the body can only absorb a set amount of protein. Plus, even if that proves true, the amount varies per person. Like I said, it's better safe than sorry.

search for ginger root. It helps you/your body absorb/digest protein more efficiently. If you're hittin the weights hard...I'm sure you could handle more than 30 grams in one setting. NOBODY ever has any pure proof or evidence substantiating claims. wish there was some.

Anyways...after I lift...I drink a 60 gram shake and would bet it's used pretty efficiently.
