i know...i dont beleive it, but please clarify this with me,...... i was told by several ppl, including a personal trainer (not that u can trust them all the time) that protein powder ameks u gain weight...ya sure if ur bulking, and it matters if u what protein powder u get...mine is good...and i eat it in my oatmeal int eh mornign and a shake in teh afternoon cause im in a rush,a dn im just wondering, if this a myth...lie.....cause they are expensive,a dn i dotn wnat to gain fat on it, i ahevnt yet so why bother worrying, right?...but jsut wanted to bring that up....thansk

lean- by the look and spelling of all words in the above post, I will take your word for it that your are always in a RUSH...LOL
now- for powders...weight gain in size and weight gain in muscle volume is going to be different...a good clean protein will keep you in a size 2...if its crap, you'll be in a size 6 in a couple of weeks...meaning that, protein will cell voluminize the muscle tissues/fibers, ie: take on water...this causes protein synthesis...this is good....
Crap protein with sugars and whatever else they throw in there will cause an overall weight and size gain= fat...muscles are 80% water, so if the muscle cells/fibers draw water, this is good- but the muscle will become heavier, hence weight gain, (because of density) but in a good way...your clothes will tell you whats going on...you will actually lean out with good quality protein....make any sense????

I really hope it isn't true. I'm a veggie, AND I'm trying to watch my carb intake. So getting enough protein, without pro shakes, would be hard...Ang

lol....yep thats true!! thanks for noticing that

(nitro-tech)..i was told by a lady workign at the nutrition store that nitro-tech adn cell-tech is oging to make me bulky...i dont beleive that......cuas ei see advertisments showing females taking the protein shakes all the time......i just dotn want to take the chance without kwoing for sure.....what ones would u suggest?

lol agreed..i dont eat red meat.... so protein powder gives me mroe avariety, and its faster to maek when im rushign like now...

lean- go to the anabolic board or supplement board, there is a newer protein out that has everybody in a flurry....I use MESO-TECH by "muscle tech" and another by SAN called INFUSION...the Meso is high in calories (340) w/ 52g pro and 24 carbs...the Infusion is (320 cals) 47g of pro and 10g of carbs....I need the CALORIES tho, because I dont eat much for a guy at 230#....I hate to cook and dont know how...and I dont want to learn...Cleaning my blender is enough of a task.... Iam sure there will be more responses to what is the best protein out there...Iam interested to see what everyone likes also? or you can just ask- make a new post...

Cell Tech has creatine in it, which WILL make you retain some water. Creatine is good for gaining a little bit of muscle but WILL NOT "make" you bulky. NitroTech is good, it is just whey protein. I use it all the time. I use MuscleTech products exclusively.

Overall, too many calories will make you gain weight. DO NOT fear protein powder.

thank you guys (PBR andf Daisygirl)

i dotn fear protein powder, i just fear gainign fat on certain ones....im just wondering which oen i should....im going to try a new one,,, which one is the best for females??

Oh my gosh! My boyfriend told me the same thing! He said, babe ifyou keep drinkiing those protein shakes, your gonna gain weight and get fat!!! i was pissed! i'm like, NO! that can't be right. I don't care if I gain muscle! I want to gain muscle. I am aware that muscle weighs more then fat, but takes up less room! You know! I use to take nitrotech, I take proti-zyme now. I really like it...it tastes great w/ water or milk. here is the break down..you guys, tell me what you think. okay.

calories : 82
protein : 18g
carbs : 1.5 g
fat :1g

I usually drink it will milk, but im leaning more towards 1 shake w/ h2o and the other w/ milk..just not to overindulge in calories!

but he really made me mad telling me im gonna get fat w/ the protein shakes!!!

I like the Optimum Nutrition whey. But I'm really cheap. :) The Syntrax Nectar powders are TASTY and very good, but a little more expensive. Thats about all I use.

You will NOT get fat from protein shakes. You WILL get fat if your calories are too high. SOME protein shakes, like some food products, are high in calories, carbs and fat (i.e., Muscle Milk, or a "meal replacement" type). If you are drinking a protein shake with minimalcarbs and fat - so it is MOSTLY protein - then it is doubtful they will make you fat. As long as you haver planned them into your diet. The problem lies when you are drinking 1-3 of them a day and they are NOT counted towards your daily caloric intake - even liquid calories count.

I would drink them with water - less calories.

Not in Canada. Unless I'm wrong about this, in Canada those products can only be sold without creatine, glutamine, and all the other "goodies". The products in Canada, even though they look identical, are different than those in the states. Each company has to make and "alternate" for sale in this country.

Anyone confirm this for me? I know my protien powder is dramatically different fromt the same stuff/same company that is sold in the states.

I think you are right griz. I know Canadian supplement laws are more strict than ours in the US. To get info on MuscleTech products, you can go to their website...they have different websites for different countries. www.muscletech.com

Well, I think I will stick w/ h20 then..that way it won't mess up anything..even though, i love 'em w/ milk. I do take them into consideration w/ my other meals and all that. I usually go onn fitday.com and track my calories. i think maybe my evening shake will consist on skim milk (if i can afford the calories) and my shake at work will have h20!

Not a bad idea, considering the milk will help slow down the absorption of the whey protein.

BUT, remember milk does conain sugar, not a good idea for cutting and especially before bed. I would try it though, and if results slow or you plateau, cut out the milk before bedtime, or cut out the milk entirely.

Roger that Daisy! I'm keeping a log of all I eat and what my exercise consists of..that way, I can see my progress..or see if i'm not making enough gains! I have a ? is that your rear on the picture on the side? If it is..I am sooooooooooooooo jealous! my butt is sooo flat! I would die for an ass like that! You go girl!!!! :) Thats for the advice..Now, you've got me leaning to just say to hell w/ it..cut out the calories and forget the milk..my goal is to be down to like 135lbs by labor day! I'm going back home that weekend and I wanna look like a lean mean ass kicking machine! i'm like 154 right now!... :)

yea guys....stay away from milk....its for cows and babies...we dont digest it well either and as Daisy pointed out, it inhibits absorption, raises estro levels too....MUSCLE-TECH products are quality products...and you should not have any discomfort from them in the GI tract....

I'd never take whey before bed. 1) raises insulin and 2) only lasts a short period of time (about 2 hrs), thus you're catabolic by midnight.

My pref is whole food, chicken breast and some veg (broc, green beans, etc), or a slow protein, but whole food is best. Slow digestion and release of amino acids into circulation, and increased thermic effect of food digestion.

Protein powder doesn't make you fat per se, but can influence insulin which inhibits lipolysis, even small amounts. Lastly, total calories are more important overall of fat gain esp in the presence of elevated insulin.

I am SO glad you are here W6, you have been missed. :)

I know whole food is better, always better, but how about Whey taken in conjunction with something before bed. I never have Whey alone - usually mixed with a little fat source or a blend protein.

Anything that slows down gastric emptying will help decrease the transit time through the system and prolong the release of the aminos into the blood as well as reduce the insulin response. Adding some fat and/or blended protein will work, but food is best.

I've been here, just don't post much. Limited on time these days.
