Protein for bedtime

Backlash

New member
What do you guys suggest for a bedtime shake?

I have N-Large 2 right now, which I like in the morning, but it has lots of carbs so it isn't good for night. I know lots of you like Optimum Whey, but I want something that isn't a whey so it doesn't digest so quickly, something that will digest slowly while I sleep (that's better for you right?).

Mix it with milk and have an egg or tuna. :)

Also, protein factory makes a night time formula with 3 or 4 different absorption rates.

might wanna try soy protein before bed. the milk is good advice as is a tuna and egg sandwich.

the protein factory, not familiar with this, shake is probably a waste of money hyped on marketing

Waste of money hyperd on marketing? It's egg protein, casein, soy, and whey...same things you just suggested. It's not rocket science. Make a shake with half soy, half cow's milk, and some whey, and you're damn close.

Here is what I consume before I go to bed:

4 boiled eggs or 42 grams of EAS Protein.

I also throw in a few carbs. . . .a bagel or 3 slices of whole wheat bread.

It being...what? The night time protein from protein factory?

I need to make some hardboiled eggs, haven't had those in forever. Tuna is also not a problem - I like to just mix a can in a bowl with A1 and eat it straight that way :)

how about you eat a real egg, you get whey and casein protein from milk, mostly casein, but still add some whey and put some soy protein in tthere. save a buck or two

that EAS protein shit louden_swain mentioned is cheap. that's what i use. soy and whey

That sounds good too... Not many grams of protein in a glass of milk though. Which is why I wanted a recommendation on some protein to mix into it :)

you could eat some fiberous carbs before bed to help too. Try something like a cup or two of broccoli and some low fat cottage cheese and egg whites, or just get some casien and eat some oatmeal, or some combination thereof.

Protein factory is a company that will mix any blend of proteins/flavors/sweeteners you want in bulk orders for a good price for those who don't know. I use them and have had good luck with them
www.proteinfactory.com
Anyway, protien shakes are a waste post workout, and avoid sugar. A small cut of steak is your best bet. It digest slowly, has complete protiens and fat to keep you growing in your sleep, but has no carbs, so you shouldn't get an insulin spike while sleeping. A couple of hard-boiled eggs would also be a good choice for the same reason.

Nice ! no I never knew, thats cool man, how long was the course for?

Thanks for the nutritional lession btw..:D

Well, I'm still in school. I'm working on my BA, which is a 4-year degree. I'm not certain if things are slightly different in Canada. Someone told me that your college degree system is different.

Ummm... avoid the advice to eat soy or low fat foods here. The higher fat foods, especially animal source fats, will keep your testosterone elevated at night. For those who juice, it will keep your shbg levels lower, which will = more free testosterone. We do want more free testosterone present when we are actually growing don't we? Also soy has now been documented to lower testorone and raise shbg in men within 2 hours of consuption, if it is a sizable portion. It also elevates estragen after chronic consumption. This is not speculation at this point since it has evidence that appears to support this claim. Avoid the milk and sandwiches also. Most of the growth hormone your body releases is during sleep. Elevated blood sugar levels have been show to consistanty blunt the reases of hgh. Less growth hormone and more circulating insulin is not the environment you want when sleeping if you are trying to maxumize lbm gains and minimize gains in body fat. Anywho just my 2 cc's.

Any protein powder will do. Don't go crazy buying special night formulas, etc, etc. It's nice to have, but not nice on the wallet. Mix it with whole milk, and put maybe a tablespoon of olive oil in it. I make my shake like this, with 3-4 scoops of powder.

Also, keep a little container with a lid and some powder in your bathroom. If you wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, mix it up with some water, and drink it real quick. But don't wake up just to have a shake midway through sleep, because sleep is the best time for repair and growth to take place, you don't want to disturb it.

Milk and sandwiches increase blood sugar and insulin but steak doesn't? I ws thinking of having a couple of eggs or tuna, plus milk and protein at night....

Steak does for some people, but it is usually not a large increase due to the lack of carbs and the slow absorbtion. Milk has alot of lactose and sandwiches have bread (kinda the definition of what makes a sandwich)

Wow, Body sure as hell seems to know his stuff. What other foods, other than steak and eggs, would be good to eat before bed to keep you in an optimal enviorment for releasing growth hormones and keeping insulin levels stable?

Since is was mentioned. I eat whole food AND whey before bed. Whole food is always better, IMO. I was responding to a Q about shakes.

hmm...if you are trying to grow don't worry about your hormone levels, just f'ing eat...obviously a whole food with a slower digesting protein is a plus but so are carbs, you WANT your insulin to spike so that the protein you consumed gets shuttled to cells.

I like natural pb and bannana on whole wheat plus a big glass of milk and 8-10 egg whites with 2-3 yolks scrambled with cheese

why not just wake up midle of the night, that way you are sure to never be catabolic. thats what ive been doing.

You wouldnt believe the difference this makes. The wife has questions when she finds me at 1:30am, basking in refridgerator light with a piece of cold steak in my had though.
:D

P.S. -- Any info from A&M can't be wrong! Good info BBF!

For now, I'm eating either eggs or tuna plus a glass of milk at bedtime. Soon I will probably look into getting some protein from proteinfactory or somewhere to mix with the milk. Thanks for all the replies guys.

I buy a blend from proteincustomizer.com that is 50% casien, 25% egg white, and 25% milk protein, and make a shake with flax oil... Perfect thing to stay anti-catabolic overnight. :)

Legion some cheese and a 3 fish oil tabs would make a good combo also if you don't wish to cook something.

Hi Body , you seem very knowledgable. Is it really true that soy increases estrogen. I take about 15 grams of protein isolate once a week is that considered chronic and what will I become if I continue ? ( eg. get female characteristics?)

Oh, and I think consuming cottage cheese before bed is nice, it has high protein, moderate fats, and super low carbs. Mix it up with some cold strawberries and a treat before bed voila!

BB:S are always getting scientific these days! I have a large glass of whole milk a banana and two slices of dark bread with tuna on.

Tuna kicks ass!

Yes its true, you probably won't elevate estragen from drinking one shake a week, but it will probably lower your testorone production and raise your shbg for several hours after drinking it. Which is great if you have prostate cancer. However, it isn't a good idea for someone trying to gain lbm or lose bf.
