Protein before and during the workout?

I have recently started some protein shakes. I don't take them every day but I should. I normally take them the nights I lift right before I go to bed. Whould I be taking them at a different time of the day? I normally eat lots of meets at lunch. What should I do. I'm lifting for power as well as having a good body.
 
I try but I never know if I'm getting enough. Its really hard to do being a college student. I know natural protein has to be better but is there one synthetic protein that would be better to take?
 
take shakes and bars only for conveniencs over real food, though i reccomend whey shakes over real food only post workout, imeediately after, b/c whey is a fast absorbing protein, also liquid is absorbed faster.
 
Real food exept post workout as mentioned above - yet sipping a protein/carb shake during workouts would yield some benifits - most people dont feel comfortable doing this and could have some GI upset.
 
i eat some protein durring a workout, but after its best to hit some real food and carbs
