proscar problem!

hi there...

I have run into some Male pattern baldness problems during my first cycle, have done some research and got a prescription for finasteride(proscar) in 5mgs/per tablet

the problem came up while i was talking to the pharmacist...

she says that if i cut the tablet into 5, it will cut the film around the tablet which protects it from being broken down in the stomach. She said this might reduce its effectiveness.. or it might not even work at all.

propecia which comes in 1mg tablets was 5x more expensive.

so, my question is, has anybody used cut up proscar and is it still quite effective?

thanks a bunch

I break mine into quarters and have not noticed any decrease in effectiveness. When i'm on I take halves.

This is an interesting thread. I never thought about it before but I suppose its possible. Some drugs its important and some its not. Im not sure if finasteride requires a protective coating or not. If so, then obviously liquid finasteride products would be useless. I have been cutting Fincar (Proscar) by Cipla (India) into 4ths for ~1.25 finasteride doses and Im wondering now if the coating matters. Its a VERY thin blue coating that doesnt appear to be anymore than a coating to improve its ability to be swallowed. Once cut, it can be peeled off very easily and its super thin. It doesnt seem like a very sophisticated coating to begin with.

Bump for anyone who knows specifics about finasteride's breakdown/absorbtion and/or any coating that is used and if this would indeed matter at all....

Did you guys know that 5-AR inhibitors promote gyno?

Thats a bit of a stretch. It inhibits DHT which in the body is a natural anti-estrogen. They prevent Test from converting to DHT so it could be said they raise estrogen slightly. But it could also be argued that they increase free test a bit too. It is an issue to keep in mind when running high doses of Test. You could run Arimidex if you are worried. Gyno from finasteride is a side effect but its not all that common.

lol, that film on the tablet does not protect the Finasteride from destruction in the stomach. The stuff dissolves in water in about 30sec, it would last in your gut all of about 5sec. The film is on there to protect women from accidental, transdermal exposure.

yeah i knew that. i was reading all about the warnings and sides of finasteride. it's all good though being that i'm taking liquidex.

Ya liquidex will alleviate the possibility of gyno. I just wanted to mention it because I see so many people taking it without even knowing. Similar to what alpine said, since none of the free test is being reduced via the 5-AR enzyme, more of it will convert to estrogen instead. A-dex or L-dex will take care of that.
