I know a lot of bodybuilders that only drink distilled water before a comptetition. What is the point in drinking distilled over normal purified water if they are both sodium free? - cbeaks

They do? Before i say what i know about distilled water, someone please confirm that they do this, and why?

all I drank the last week was distilled water.....not sure of the exact reason but it has something to do with all the minerals and shit that's in purified water....I was just doing what I was told :D

LOL!! I know what you are talking about.

Did it hurt your stomach or make you shit like son of a bitch? If it's true distilled water with no minerals then it should fuck you up a little, temporaraly.

Water that it void of minerals is starving for minerals. It will pull minerals from you body in an effort to balence it's self out. This is why you should feel a stumach ache and get diahrea.

Why do BB'ers do this? What is wrong with minerals?

we're talking about the last week before a show.....and you don't get any of those sides from drinking it....

I have never had any of those sides either. I don't know if my trainer that I am using this year will have me do this but if he does I will ask him for his reasoning and get back to you guys on it. He is old school so my guess is that he will have me go with the distilled water. - cbeaks

It must not be the distilled water i used to make when i was in plant utilities. The stuff was completly void of minerals for the pharmasuetical industry and surgery.

I do not cut sodium so distilled water would not make sense and I do not think it is nessassary.

Even if you do cut sodium it doesn't make sense to me because neither purified or distilled water has any sodium. - cbeaks

True, Reverse Osmosis removes sodium.

Some people also drink Spring water and it does have some sodium but its so minimal it does not matter.

exactly. Some guru's/bodybuilders get too anal with this. Kinda like the guys that don't brush there teeth for the week before the show for fear of swallowing tooth paste that has sodium. - cbeaks

I just talked to my contest advisor about distilled water and he said it isn't necessary the last week like some say. The only reason some people may have recommended that in the past is to make sure that the competitor is drinking sodium free water since not all water is sodium free but all distilled water is. He agreed that sodium free water that still had the minerals in it was a better choice. - cbeaks

Distilled "drinking water" is good for many reason, a good reason for year round is that it is devoid of ALL content (minerals, florides etc.) because of this it saps the toxins from the system more efficiantly I/E clean blood / liver etc. because the water is PURE
It is literly all I drink

I have now officially heard it all...

If it is void of ALL minerals than it is also "sapping" (if that is a word) MINERALS from your body. Not good in my opinion.

From what I understand is that distilled water is better than any water because:

*It flushes your system clean.
*Pure H2O will not "sap nutrients from your system.

A friend of mine has his Kineaseology degree and that's all he drinks. He got me started on it because he told me about spring water and all the shit that could be in it. If a wild animal takes a piss in the spring, there really isn't any filtration process that could filter out all of the urine. Plus he said that all the minerals and other bullshit in the water isn't something that you need to get from water. Also that that is what turns your teeth yellow. If you guys are really concerned about the minerals, I recomend "Smart Water." It's distilled water with key electrolytes to keep you hydrated.

I don't want to debate anymore because the distilled water you buy the store is not completely void of everthing. If it was, like the stuff we make at work, then you would not be able to live off of it.

btw...a degree in Kineaseology doesn't mean you know anything about water chemistry. You would be suprised at what water filtration can do. You may not get the deer piss out, but you sure can make it completely harmless. Of coarse, when they sell spring water, they don't even put it through RO membranes. I'll give him that.

He is right about not needing to get your minerals from water, but water truly void of all minerals will rob your body of minerals.

Well,
My info came from a 48 yr. old Emergency room surgeon, (He is a client) he also has a sports medicine practice in Manhattan Beach Ca. ,
By his recomendation many pro's and myself drink only distilled drinking water, he is extremely well educated in many forms of medicine and stays VERY progressive...
This will be my last reply on this issue...
Peace...

I have one of those Ozarka water coolers at my house and they sell distilled water. It taste like shit. I guess it is arsenic free. They guy told me that the arsenic comes from sandstone and it is in all water except distilled.

Something i found for you to read...

Early Death Comes From Drinking Distilled Water
During nearly 19 years of clinical practice I have had the opportunity to observe the health effects of drinking different types of water. Most of you would agree that drinking unfiltered tap water could be hazardous to your health because of things like parasites, chlorine, fluoride and dioxins. Many health fanatics, however, are often surprised to hear me say that drinking distilled water on a regular, daily basis is potentially dangerous.Paavo Airola wrote about the dangers of distilled water in the 1970's when it first became a fad with the health food crowd.Distillation is the process in which water is boiled, evaporated and the vapour condensed. Distilled water is free of dissolved minerals and, because of this, has the special property of being able to actively absorb toxic substances from the body and eliminate them. Studies validate the benefits of drinking distilled water when one is seeking to cleanse or detoxify the system for short periods of time (a few weeks at a time). Fasting using distilled water can be dangerous because of the rapid loss of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride) and trace minerals like magnesium, deficiencies of which can cause heart beat irregularities and high blood pressure. Cooking foods in distilled water pulls the minerals out of them and lowers their nutrient value.Distilled water is an active absorber and when it comes into contact with air, it absorbs carbon dioxide, making it acidic. The more distilled water a person drinks, the higher the body acidity becomes. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, "Distilled water, being essentially mineral-free, is very aggressive, in that it tends to dissolve substances with which it is in contact. Notably, carbon dioxide from the air is rapidly absorbed, making the water acidic and even more aggressive. Many metals are dissolved by distilled water."The most toxic commercial beverages that people consume (i.e. cola beverages and other soft drinks) are made from distilled water. Studies have consistently shown that heavy consumers of soft drinks (with or without sugar) spill huge amounts of calcium, magnesium and other trace minerals into the urine. The more mineral loss, the greater the risk for osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, hypothyroidism, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure and a long list of degenerative diseases generally associated with premature aging.A growing number of health care practitioners and scientists from around the world have been advocating the theory that aging and disease is the direct result of the accumulation of acid waste products in the body. There is a great deal of scientific documentation that supports such a theory. A poor diet may be partially to blame for the waste accumulation. Meats, sugar, white flour products, fried foods, soft drinks, processed foods, alcohol, dairy products and other junk foods cause the body to become more acidic. Stress, whether mental or physical can lead to acid deposits in the body. There is a correlation between the consumption of soft water (distilled water is extremely soft) and the incidence of cardiovascular disease. Cells, tissues and organs do not like to be dipped in acid and will do anything to buffer this acidity including the removal of minerals from the skeleton and the manufacture of bicarbonate in the blood. The longer one drinks distilled water, the more likely the development of mineral deficiencies and an acid state. I have done well over 3000 mineral evaluations using a combination of blood, urine and hair tests in my practice. Almost without exception, people who consume distilled water exclusively, eventually develop multiple mineral deficiencies. Those who supplement their distilled water intake with trace minerals are not as deficient but still not as adequately nourished in minerals as their non-distilled water drinking counterparts even after several years of mineral supplementation. The ideal water for the human body should be slightly alkaline and this requires the presence of minerals like calcium and magnesium.Distilled water tends to be acidic and can only be recommended as a way of drawing poisons out of the body. Once this is accomplished, the continued drinking of distilled water is a bad idea.Water filtered through reverse osmosis tends to be neutral and is acceptable for regular use provided minerals are supplemented.Water filtered through a solid charcoal filter is slightly alkaline. Ozonation of this charcoal filtered water is ideal for daily drinking. Longevity is associated with the regular consumption of hard water (high in minerals). Disease and early death is more likely to be seen with the long term drinking of distilled water. Avoid it except in special circumstances.Zoltan P. Rona MD MSc

Do you know the differance between "distiled water" and "distilled DRINKING WATER"...

Clue me in please. How does the process differ? My whole argument may be a waste of time. To me, the key word is DISTILLED. Is it distilled to a lesser degree for drinking? I hope you know, with a comment like that. :D

Really people get sooooo locked up about sodium...the only time you may need to go zero sodium is the last two days if that.
Your body stores sodium so it's never sodium free, and if you starve it it's going to store even more.
In extreme cases, distilled water (any type that has no minerals/ions..etc.) will "leech" minerals and electrolytes from the blood stream circulation and or the body.

Now I say this because....distilled water with out any ions or minerals will leech take out suck up minerals in the blood and be excreted through the renal system.

for example I work in the pharmaceutical industry and we had two workers get very sick and develop blood problems because they drank a lot of distilled de-ionized ultrapure water thinking it was more healthy.

Now it is important to note that I said EXTREME cases...as these two male workers were 50 years old + and were drinking gallons of the stuff a day from the purification tap....I don't think distilled water is completely ion free, sodium free but not ion free like the water they were drinking.

I have been ther done that advised by gurus to not brush my teeth when sodium depleting, don't take in artificial sweetners etc...I don't think it will make a hill of beans difference being anal about it.....it's not like your injesting a gram of sodium a day....

Q: What about those minerals, aren't they beneficial to my diet?
A: The dietary benefit of the minerals found in water is the cause for a good deal of debate. Some feel that those minerals are essential for good health. Others believe that those minerals are not readily absorbed by the body; and that the best ways to get essential minerals is with a healthy diet and / or high quality vitamin/mineral supplements. The problem with relying upon your water to provide minerals for your health is that it's an "all or nothing" proposition. If you drink water that contains the minerals you desire, there's also the possibility that you're consuming the metals that are harmful, like lead or mercury. So, we recommend removing all of the contaminants and then supplementing your diet with only the minerals you want to consume. This way you control what you put in your body.

Q: Does distilled water leach minerals from my body?
A: What the proponents of this myth want you to believe is that because distilled water is so pure, drinking it will leach minerals from your body, thereby robbing you of good health and nutrition. There is no basis of fact to document this claim. The following is a quote from Fit for Life II: Living Health by Harvey & Marilyn Diamond:

"Distilled water has an inherent quality. Acting almost like a magnet, it picks up rejected, discarded, and unusable minerals and, assisted by the blood and the lymph, carries them to the lungs and kidneys for elimination from the body. The statement that distilled water leaches minerals from the body has no basis in fact. It doesn't leach out minerals that have become part of the cell structure. It can't and it won't. It collects only minerals that have already been rejected or excreted by the cells. To suggest that distilled water takes up minerals from foods so that the body derives no benefit from them is absurd."

In arenas like this board we engage in what I would hope is healthy discussion designed to increase our individual knowledge bases, controversy and disagreement are a part of these types of forums, where there is a do, there is often a don't, where there is a yes there is often a no, in the end it is the choice of the individual what he chooses to believe based on fact, and often even those differ,
Peace

actually it's not very pure at all in a plastic bottle which leaches synthetic estrogens into the water from the plastic...extractables...

in an individual that is severlely dehydrated and nutrient restricted ditilled water can be a killer...well at least make a difference...as you have no basis to say it does not leach minerals from the body...after a thorough investigation for the gentlemen mentioned above with the blood problems-that's what the doctor and specialists confirmed..the DEIONIZED H20 was the culprit reducing iron and sodium and potassium levels to affect blood volume and concentration....;)
