I'm a competetive bodybuilder so it's manditory. That being said it's much cleaner so I keep it off all year round.

I just trim the pits to about 1/4" with a #2 gaurd clippers (and below there too). It's a trick we sorta figured out in the military to not smell so bad on the long marches in the southern heat during basic training. I still do it because I'm active and it's easy to trim em when I buzz my head every couple weeks.

Unless you're a comp BBer, shaving em clean isn't very ummm... masculine... you'd look too much like you're a little kid or a queer.

shave the arm pits, chest, keep a happy trail to crotch; trim the crotch area; shave the balls, shaft, taint and the crack. plus the legs. clean and tan, baby!

i;ve seen some masculine marines that shave all the hair outta their pits and 'queer' isn't something I''d say to their face! masculine is as masculine does. hairy pits don't make the difference.
