Please help guys! I don't know what to do!

I posted the other day about how I had an MRI which has revealed a tear 50% of the way through the thickness of my triceps tendon. The team doctor and head trainer both think I should sit out, but they are leaving the decision to me. Their concern is that there is a good chance I will tear the tendon completely, and thus require sugery.

My question is... say the worst happens and I need surgery. What type of debilitation should expect? How long would I be out? Would I ever be able to lift BIG again? (and by lift big, i mean not having to do sets of 20 with 225 for the rest of my life.) Will I be able to throw my kids around when I'm a dad? How will this affect my life?

There are only two games left in the season. What would you guys do? Please share your thoughts.

p.s. if i mod could copy this to the chat board i would appreciate it.

I tore the pec tendon completely off the bone. I'm not sure how it compares to a partial triceps tendon tear but I assume its similar.

If I were you I would not risk injuring it any further. Get the surgery as soon as possible. It took me about 6 weeks even before I could start rehab. Rehab lasted another 8 weeks and it was mostly stretching exercises for the first month and then very light weights for another month after that.

So almost 3 months after the surgery is when I first started to train chest again. I was using the lightest weight and still straining. Surprisingly, the strength started to come back little by little every week. Ita been about a year since the surgery and I'm guessing my strength is close to about 90% and getting a little stronger everytime. The doc said it would only be 80-90% when fully recovered by I hope to prove him wrong.

Good luck with that tricep and hope it heals up quickly. Just remember not to rush the rehabilitation. Its a slow long process and frustrating at times.

thanks for the advice, LoD. If I sat out the rest of the season, I could avoid surgery for sure. It's not torn so much that it can't heal on its own (with the help of maybe some deca, GH, and a little A.R.T. treatment). And if it does tear... it sounds like i'd miss most of my offseason training, and maybe not even be able to play next year.

if i have any brains, i'll sit out our last two games. we're not even making the playoffs this year. but man i've been kicking ass the last few weeks. this sucks.

If you take the chance and it does tear then you will probably be in a worse situation than you are now (worrying about how it will heal)

yeah, if you dont go the surgery route, definitely play it safe and let it heal, dont take any unnecessary chances. Best of Luck

A serious injury like that is not worth fucking yourself up for life. Long after football you are going to want to be in the gym and lift as heavy as you can-why risk it for a few games?
TO me your statements already answered your questions. Sit it out.

I've had numerous shoulder injuries but no muscle tears.

I get the feeling that you're fooling yourself thinking that surgery is not a big deal and that you can recover easily. You're probably saying to yourself that you will play those 2 games and if you tear it, then big deal you'll just do surgery.

I use to think that way to until I talked to some people who had surgery.

Judging by your handle, you like wrestling. How long has HHH being out now? And he's a guy who will work through anything.

well you guys have convinced me to at least sit out todays practice. I'm having another doctor give me his opinion, which i'll have in the morning. If he says I could squeeze out one or two more games, I will. If not... I'm done. You guys are right. My future isn't in playing football. I came back to play (I'm 24 and a grad student) because its fun and I love it. But in the future, lifting will be my only true physical outlet. If I don't have that, I'll be devastated. Thanks guys.
