please give me some diet advice (pic)

hey guys, this is a pic of my buddy. hes 6', 290 bf%??? too high. he wants to lose some weight obviously and get down to around 250 for his first goal. any advice would be appreciated. thanks

Obviously, your friend has a lot of work to do. He needs more than a few tips. He needs a strict diet and workout program.

How old is he?
Have you got him started on a diet or workout at all yourself yet?
I'm normally not a big CKD fan, but I think it would help him. Have you looked into that?

There is hope for him if he's serious about it, especially if he's younger. I was not too far from that many years ago.
 
first off id have him lift 3 times per week..becuase more muscle mass will burn cals...

second: strict diet

third cardio 3-4 times per week

thanks guys, hes only 18 right now. im trying to get him to workout and do cardio, but hes not very motivated. i just think its unhealthy to be holding that much weight. any other opinions?
 
Depends on his dedication level. How dedicated he is will determine how much cardio/diet/weights will work. He can do it no doubt but it's a hellish road. Determination is the key, knowledge of what to do and eat is the lock.

I would look into HIIT style cardio and working out 4 times a week. For diet I like CKD a lot as well w/ the carb up every few days.

LoL, that nailed it right there. I was exactly where your friend well, i was 5'11" and 285. I saw my picture one day and thought, "my god, what have i done". Atkins has been working for me. 6 months ago i was 285, today i'm 210 and shooting for 170 (hopefully i'll be there in 6 months). Loosing 75lbs ain't a bad start ;). Hell, i don't care if it takes me 6 months or 3 years to loose the last 40lbs. I made myself what i was, so i'll consistantly work to change who i am.
 
First off, he's not THAT bad off. And from the looks of it, he has a high fat/carb diet with out working out, so.............

ANYTHING would help, and I bet the first 40 pounds will melt off like butter.

Bodyforlife program is a GREAT idea. Thats the program I follow as well. Its great for anyone, especially "natural" people.
 
Man, its just freaky looking at that pic. That was basically me 6 months ago. Tell him that whatever he does to loose weight, its worth it ;). Theres nothing like dropping from a 48 to a 38
 
gradual changes are the best. first have him start out with cardio for a week or two then add in some weights, machine or free.

find out what "good" foods that he likes to eat and make them the basis for his diet so he looks forward to eating.
 
Yeah, thats a good point too. Make sure that he realizes that he has the flexability of picking a diet with foods that he will enjoy. He doesn't have to suffer. For some its Low Fat, others Low Carb. Theres so many out there he can find one that fits. There are a lot of good diet and exercise combos out there
 
thanks guys, i really appreciate the replys... hes a great friend of mine and i hate to see him like this. not only does it look bad, but its extrememly unhealthy. im going to send him all of these replys and try to motivate him and see what we can get going. thanks for not flaming either, i know it is hard sometimes, but im sure it will mean alot to him to just see positive responses.

The best gift you can give your friend is an appointment with an MD that is willing to work with a dietician. Your friend needs to have his fatloss/weightloss/etc.... monitored as well as have a personalized lifestyle program. He cannot get this on these boards, he cannot get it from a book, and he certainly can't get it unless he is willing to personally enter in to the discussion. You may care for him, but ulitmatley he has to make the commitment and educate himself to make the changes for better health.
 
Back in April this year I was 340 (6' tall).

Since then I have hit the gym at least 5 days a week, done cardio on an empty stomach in the mornings, done increasing amounts of weights at least 3 times a week, monitored my food and eaten a low fat diet.

I used Xenadrine for 2 months and then took 2 months off it before restarting.

I am now down to 230 and am still losing fat and gaining muscle.

At the end of the day it will require a change of lifestyle to achieve what your friend needs. It will take time and dedication, but it can work. He has to want to do it though.

You can help by encouraging him and going to the gym with him at least until he gets into a decent routine.

There are no quick fixes for what he needs, just hard work.

Yep, it has to be his decision. For me something just clicked in my head that I had to lose weight (I am 6' was 255 now 195 from a 40 waist to a 34). I had my wife take a before pic, and let me say that is the BEST thing I could of done. I would work my ass off and go home and look in the mirror and think my God, I don't look any different and this training crap isn't working. It was about two months later that we FINALLY got the pics developed.....and let me tell you my wife and I were astonished the change I had made in just 2 short months. After that I new things were going to change so I just kept doing it....I was and STILL am ADDICTED to my new lifestye. We have pics of me from every month for the past 10 months (front, side, and back). Just looking at those prove you are changing, gives you a sense of what you are doing is worth it and also lets you evaluate yourself to see what you can do to further progress. One other thing that was my best friend thorugh it was WATER!!!!
