Please Give Me Back My Manhood
Daily Record (UK) | May 27, 2004 | Mark Mcgivern
A MILLIONAIRE who had a sex-swap operation to become a woman wants to be a man again.
Dad-of-two Charles Kane became Samantha seven years ago.
He claims he was rushed into the decision and is now suing his surgeon for £186,442.
Property developer and designer Kane, 44, says he agreed to the op after his wife left him and he suffered a nervous breakdown.
He claims gender identity specialist Dr Russell Reid convinced him to have the sex-change surgery.
And he's launched a High Court action claiming damages for the trauma of losing his manhood thanks to 'negligent or reckless' advice from the doctor.
Kane, from Newcastle, claims he suffers from 'penis envy' and has felt extremely inadequate as he has lived as a castrated man since the surgery.
He said: 'The whole experience was very distressing for me it was a devastating operation and very difficult.
'I was a heterosexual male I have never been gay and that is why it didn't make any sense to have this operation.
'People who knew me never thought I would have this sort of surgery but I had a real lack of confidence so I went to the doctor, who convinced me I needed the surgery.'
Born Sam Hashimi in Iraq, Charles Kane came to Britain in the 1970s and led a life of luxury in London and the north of England. He built an empire through property development and interior design.
A passionate football fan, he led a takeover bid for Sheffield United in 1990.
But Kane split from his wife and was unable to see his kids, now 18 and 19. His business suffered and he ended up in prison, followed by a psychiatric hospital.
Then he met Dr Reid and the surgeon convinced him he was living as a woman in a man's body. Just eight months after the first consultation, Kane went under the knife.
Now writing a book about his experiences called Back On Mars From A Long Trip To Venus, he said: 'I didn't think to question the doctor's decision. If a doctor says you needan operation you have to have one.
'I took hormones which changed my mind and my body so I wasn't thinking clearly.
'After the surgery my mind was a lot clearer and I felt better. I went back to him and told him I wanted to live back as a man because I knew I wasn't a woman.
'I do want to get this court case out of the way and to move on to be just a normal type of guy.
'I want to settle down with someone and move on, but the experience of living as a woman was beneficial and at least I know how a woman feels.'
Dr Reid, who works at the private London Institute, refused to comment last night.
