CARY, Ill. - A 10-year-old boy was in critical condition Sunday after three pit bulls escaped from a home and went on a rampage, attacking six people before police shot and killed the dogs, authorities said.

No charges had been filed Sunday, but McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren said it was being investigated as a crime scene.

Neighbors said the attacks started late Saturday afternoon when children going door-to-door for a fund-raiser arrived at the home of Scott Sword, 41, who owned the dogs.

"We had music playing, and I heard this bizarre sound," said Debby Rivera, who lives three houses away. "I looked out the window, and I saw a young boy. The dogs were just jumping on him."

"The screams were horrible," she said. The dogs were "relentless, like they were possessed."

The pit bulls attacked the two children, and when the dogs' owner tried to stop them, the dogs turned on him and bit off his thumb, Nygren said. The boy's father also tried to protect his son and was attacked. The dogs went after another neighbor as well.

"The scene sprawled over a couple blocks, it was a very chaotic scene," said Lt. Michael Douglas of the Cary Fire Protection District.

Residents threw rocks at the dogs and honked car horns to try to distract them from attacking before police arrived and shot the animals.

Jim Malone said he and a neighbor tried to beat the dogs back with baseball bats. "He'd hit them, they'd run, and they'd come back," Malone said. "This went on for 15 minutes."

The boy who was attacked, Nick Foley, was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday. His friend Jordan Lamarre, also 10, was in serious condition. Nick's father was listed in good condition. Sword and two others were treated for injuries and released.

when large breed dogs attack sure there will be more damage than a smaller breed...when a Big guy fights hes more likely to hurt someone too....so lets ban all large build guys or put them all to sleep! yeah thats it...if we kill all big guys we will have less deaths due to violence.
 
They´re ugly and dangerous. Or at least more dangerous than other dogs.

I personally think its mostly idiots that own them . That includes or perhaps even specifically includes pitbull owners that post on EF.
 
Anyone that doesnt think these dogs are dangerous are deluding themselves. Ive witnessed an attack by a dog at our party house in university. It was OUR dog, and attacked while we were brawling, it attacked one of us. The dogs have no sense. Kill them all

Ohhhh. I love that last dog. German Shepards will always be my favorite breed.
 
Also, it seems that too many people here put fault on the pitt bull. Look, I have large dogs and NONE of them have ever EVEN AS MUCH AS LOOK! at another person the wrong way. They are big dogs, so you have to discipline them and TRAIN them to be obedient. If you train your dog to be pissed off and fight, what do you expect ? it's the OWNER that is liable for all of this not the dogs. Anyone here think a dog is smart enough to make "educated" decisions ? I didn't think so.

I had a Great Dane, and I had to get rid of him after he showed SOME aggressive behaviour towards my kids - long time ago! no matter if you have a maltese or a boerboel (up to 150lbs.-200lbs.), you need to know how to control your dog, and if you teach it to be aggressive, well so shall it be. The owners are responsible NOT THE DOGS!

My brother owns a presa canario (Canary Island fighting dog) and, no, it's not what you think. This is the sweetest dog I have EVER met; in fact, his chihuahua is 10x more agressive than the Presa canario. Although the PC are considered one of the most deadliest dogs in the world, my brothers dog allows kids to ride on his back and spends most of the time begging for treats and doing tricks for food lol. He's 10x gentler than my doberman pinscher. Shows you that it's NOT the dog, it's the way you raise it and the attitude of the owners.

In the United States, pit bulls make up one to three per cent of the overall dog population and cause more than 50 per cent of serious attacks.

i'VE HAD SEVERAL DOGS IN MY LIFE, & i NEVER FELT THREATENED BY ANY OF THEM. Oops, case problem.
Anyways, my Dad had this little fukin shi tzu, & it bit several of my step sister's kids. Had the little fukker put down.
I'm sure most of it has to do with the training & treatment of the dog. But some dogs have a greater ability to kill, & are harder to stop once they start. Would I trust my Grandkids safety with a dog I didn't know personally? Nope. Pitbulls, Mastiffs & such would be on top of the list. But I would be leary about Sheperds, Collies, Poodles, J.R. Terriers, etc.
Bottom line, if you have kids, trust no one elses dog. If you have a dog, train it & control it.

I bet I could train a 7 lbs. Chihuahua to rip your hand open and go for your throat, how ? simple, with brutal upbrining and training.

I wont throw out racial slurs, but there is a reason pitbulls are involved in all these attacks. If you had done your research instead of displaying ignorance, you would have known. The reason: Pitts are mainly used as fighting dogs in certain 'neighborhoods' ; thus, making them very aggressive and very likely to attack a person without any reason.

This will go for any bread trained to fight and kill without any type of understanding of the humans' around it.

You are obviously not a big dog owner, if you were you would have known that large dogs including Rottweilers and Pittbulls have unique personalities and need to be treated in a special way. I.e. obedience training!

You can post anything you want, but in the end of the day ignorance and arrogance of fools and morons, including politicians, will prevail over reality! So I'm not too worried.

I just wish less ignorant fools would post here!

Let me guess, these are the same folks that believe that more taxes and more social programs are good for the country! including Unions LOL :rolleyes:

a bigger dog will obviously impose more damage because hes BIGGER. cockerspaniels are liek the most agressive dogs...right up there with chiuaua's. but they are smaller so they dont do as much damage...why not kill them? i bet the #'s would say small dogs bite more frequently and have shorter natural temper's. back to what i said earlier...if we should kill pitts and the like...then we should kill all overlybuilt people and those with combat/fighting training because if in a fight they would impose more harm on someone than say an angry midget. and why not outlaw SUVs because in a wreck they cause more damage than a VW beetle
