it would be cool, but I wouldn't want to feed them live fish.. also having a tank is a lot of work.

holy shit man.. why on earth did it die??? of course I remember the thread.. I thought you had everything setup ready to go for it... what happened?

My buddy had a Piranha and a Jack Dempsey years back. QWe all threw in the money to cover the fish and he threw them in the tank together. All they did was swinm in circles around each other for about 5 minutes and we said fuck it and seperated them.

I always wanted a big ass tank. Like 100 gal or something. Shit's too much work tho. Maybe someday.

i think eventually the pirahna would win right? they have the teeth.

i'd love to have a nice tank too, but I agree, so much work.

When i was going to buy him i asked the guy at the petstore to feed him. I always take fish home with a full belly especially if im buying an expensive fish (in the event some shit happens where he gets stressed out and doesnt eat for awhile he has enough energy to cope with the new surroundings, etc...)

Well. He threw food in and it didnt eat. I was in love with the fish so i said what ever. Maybe hes not hungry.

Took him home, along with 3 other fish i bought that day and threw them in the tank, acclimating him and everything before just dumping him in.

He looked healthy and happy. Over the next few days every time i fed my fish (including the 3 other ones i bought from the same store) he would not eat. Im never happy until a fish eats. When they eat that first time you know your alright.

The 5th day i see a little cottony fungus growing on his head. I get worried. Set up a 10 gallon hospital tank right away. Yank him from the 125 gallon and start medicating for the fungus. Within hours he started to get bloat in his stomach (which was why he wasnt eating) and cant get his equilibirum right. Hes swiiming sideways, upside down, etc...)

6th day. He was dead. I was pissed. Really fuckin pissed. Went back to the petstore the next day and talked to the guy (who knows my face) and explained everything you just read from him not eating in the store to not eating in my tank.

He gave me a $140 credit. What did i do with that money? Set up a 30 gallon African tank, went online. Bought about 6 pairs of breeders and about 10 babies for $300.

So now I am going to begin breeding these things and selling them to the pet store or whomever wants them.

wow man.. that is really sad... i'm glad you got your money back, but I know you were excited about that fish and it looked cool on top of that.

What a terrible way to go though.. head fungus.. bloating up.. can't swim.. RIP little buddy... what was his name?

You got that shit down to a science though.. hospital tanks... 30 gallon african tank (what exactly is that?)

what kinda breeders did you get? cichlids? Why the 10 babies?

Sorry about the fish Dunk.

How long does it take to raise one of those Africans to a suitable size to sell?

My brother had a 100 gal tank w/ 3 pirhana in it - he fed them frozen gold fish & was breeding guppies or somethign to feed the pirhana. Damn those things were ugly. They just cruised out looking pissed off & taking a chunk out of each other every now & then.

African tank means its not fresh water cichlids. (central american) or salt water but the fish i have come from the reefs of African Lakes. Higher PH, and has salt but not fully salt. kinda like half and half.

these are what Aftrican Cichlids look like as opposed to your oscars, angels, and tropical shit.

The breeders i bought are all Aulonacara's (Peacocks) which was the species of fish i just lost. But in different colors and types. I got a good variety of peacocks. 5 of the babies are Ruby Red Peacocks like the one i just lost. I paid $5.50 a piece for babies. Beats mature adults at over $100 in a petstore. I found a breeder who sells them dirt cheap.

So i decided to set up a 30 gallon to hold the breeders for breeding. When they have babies, stipem into my 10 gallon to mature. As i raise them each fish will work its way into my 125 gallon and so forth. They multiply so i can sell the frye to the petstore at a decent size for a decent price.

About 3-6 months if you feed them properly. When they are born you can barely see them. I hope this works out. Its cool to raise prize fish. People will pay a good dollar if you raise a really nice looking one and breeding increases your chances at that.

so there are a ton of different types of the cichlids? but they all come from the same spots in Africa?

Some look a LOT different then others, both in colors and body shape/size.

You sound like a pro at this, good luck.

Name one of them Yanosh.

alot of different types of African cichlids yes. I have a big variety in my 125 but only want to breed Peacocks b/c they are dope looking and worth money.

there are different types of cichlids like i said from different continents. but again. these are just Africans im dealing with.

I had an alligator gar for 2 years before he got too expensive to feed. Thing would eat like 20 goldfish, then lay on the bottom all fat and lazy. Then he'd just eat the dumb fish that got too close to his head. He ate everything I put in the tank. Never touched the fish that were there before I put him in. He spent a night on my back porch and lived to kill again. I needed a regular fishing net to get him out when it was his time to be free.
