There actually is something akin to "probable cause" in Mexico. I'm talking about "warrants" labeled as either ordenes de cateo (search) or aprehension (arrest). The Fifth Article in the Mexican Constitution prohibits a revision in any other circumstance. Unless, of course, the party in question grants permission.
Most Mexicans are not aware of that kind of protection. Most don't make it past high school. Legally ignorant? Yes. It's one reason why police are wont to abuse power.
You got out, right? I'm glad to hear it. You realize that the police never had a legitimate case. No drugs, guns, etc. All that took place is a form of harassment that usually can be resolved using your wallet. Otherwise, you would be pondering your next move in the penal.
