PETA urges Hamburg, N.Y. to change name
April 22, 2003 | HAMBURG, N.Y. (AP) -- A national animal rights group has offered Hamburg officials $15,000 to change the town's name to Veggieburg.
"The town's name conjures up visions of unhealthy patties of ground-up dead cows," said Joe Haptas, spokesman of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, in a letter faxed Monday to Hamburg Supervisor Patrick Hoak.
PETA offered to supply area schools with $15,000 worth of non-meat patties for the name change.
"Our offer is serious as a heart attack," Haptas said.
Hoak immediately declined.
"With all due respect, I think it's a delicacy in our community," he said about hamburgers. "We're proud of our name and proud of our heritage."
The Buffalo suburb, named Hamburg since 1812, claims to be the birth place of the American culinary staple. Hamburg commemorates the birth of hamburgers at the annual Burgerfest.
In 1996, PETA proposed that the Hudson Valley town of Fishkill change its centuries-old name to Fishsave, since the group believed the name conjured up violent imagery of dead fish.
The town was named by Dutch settlers in the early 1600s. "Kill" is the Dutch word for "stream."

quick question, do you view groups like NOW or PETA or The Green Cross (never heard of them) as representatives of mainstream or moderate liberals or do you think of them as being extreme left wing?

dont think i consider every democrat to be some wacked out leftist. i dont have many hard feelings towards those rank-and-file democrats, who simply vote democratic because their entire family always did....you know the type. the type of democrats that couldnt tell you why they vote democratic if they had to.
but at the same time, i also place some of the blame on the rank-and-file for voting these people in,
my animosity is mostly directed towards the caliber of people who hang out at DU, idiotic college students, and the elite left leadership.

a girl in my german class did a thing on animal rights in Germany (germany has an animal constitution--- pretty wack imo) and then pulled up some movies from PETA top it all off.... the weird thing is for a 'healthy' vegetarian, shes by far the fatest girl in my class.

The "green cross code" is a lil ditty you learn as a kid that teaches you to cross to road safely.
Y'know Poink, there are a lot of different types of liberals out there. Not every conservative is Pat Buchanan either. I feel no need to defend any of these folks as I have nothing in common with them.

I really hate these morons. I work with two of these card carrying PETA members. They are always talking about how I"m going to have a heart attack for eating meat but they are both fat asses! I still don't see how a vegan can get fat.

Fucking Hell! There should be allowances towards cannibalism in the US.
