Personal trainers, how is the money?

Wrong board I know, I'll see what replies I get before this gets moved though. And my questions pertains to how it was in the beginning and how it is when you're established. All replies are very much appreciated.

It depends on where you are (demographic wise), what the gym's regulatoins are, if you are an hourly employee or independant of the gym, how good you are, etc. It is tough to get established if you are in the wrong area (aka Arkansas).

Too many factors to answer

Are you splitting with a gym??

Are you providing hand-on?

diet

etc??

I get 80 an hour...I have been doing it for years and have a list of state/national level caliber clients though

Thats the cheapest I even heard of. Trainers in my area are at least $50/hr..Trainers are a dime a dozen, most have that cheap ass certificate you can get online for $600.. Nice to have, but to me a trainer better have more than that to their resume..

My wife it the fitness manager of Golds. They make from 18-30 hr. She is bringing home a avg of 1500 a week

thats actual money wow had no idea they were paying 1500 a week thats $75,000 a year ,maybe the manager at the gold gym in tampa off waters needs to relocate they only pay him 36,000$ a year.

Is she in newyork ,cali or seattle?
most of the personal trainers around here just end up selling cycles of roids to clients and mark it up to make a few buck towards the bills then do the 50$ a hour thing while training them.

depends how good you are IMO....referrals are everything in the business. :coffee:

It all depends. At Gold's (at least where I'm at) you have floor wages and training wages plus commission. The more certified you get (i.e., NASM, APEX, related degrees, etc.) the more your training wages are. Also, with the commissions, if you hit certain marks, you get money added to your training wages plus the commission plus bonuses. If you're good and you put in the time, you can make decent dough. I don't plan on working as a trainor once I'm done with school, but it's a nice gig while in college cause I get to pretty much pick my hours. Plus it suits me.

So she is working like 80 hours per week? I think you must mean every 2 weeks: 40 hours per week at $25/hr would only GROSS $1000/week! I doubt that 80 hours per week at $25/hour would net $1500 a week......it would if 40 hours were overtime I guess.

If you are well known you can make a killing. Milos Sarchev charges $350 just for an hour consultation

Does he at least tell you he loves you, after he f*cks you with that price?? I wonder if that includes a few shot of test too..

I have a memeber ship to an Elite Gym a town away

and those trainers make $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

as a trainer the last thing you want to do is charge less

it takes about a year to build a base, always opt to charge more, and dont undervalue your work, in fact honor it.

Also dont get caught up in gossip with other trainers, always mind your own, and service the client.

you will find that with clients they will want to talk about everything, and you kinda have to get used to that, just try to listen to them mostly.

He doesn't train the average person either. He would if you had the money, but I am sure he is training athletes/celebs and rich people.

To speak the truth...

personal trainers money really doesnt come from coach training or consultations
money comes from "favors" late at night at her :p: or his :worried: home.

Yeah, yeah, i know, not all personal trainers do so, but MOST do. :p

My buddy back home goes to his clients house to train them. He is making serious money and has 2 other trainers working for him. He's trained ishe smith who is a proboxer. He's not the brightest guy but he knows his shit when it comes to diets and programs. I think he charges 100-125 a session. Oh by the way, most of his clients are rich housewives. Lucky guy.

Amen Bro. Arkansans would fall over if you tried to charge them $25 hr.

In the gym here, trainers only make $15 hr. and the owner of the gym gets 15% of that.

The gym that I train at is pretty high end, I charge a dollar a minute. The gym takes half of what I make though!!!! Its total bullshit. They rape us bad. They make half a million dollars a year off of the trainers.

OK, don't pay them then. Do they have to know exactly what you charge? Can't you train your clients at another gym? Do they have to know that you are a trainer that is charging money? Charge them a $100 fee for advice on how to live a better life at the end of each workout outside of the premises.

good idea Mlong

i was watching that show Work Out on BRavo, it was retarded but i checked out there website they range from 130 to 400 an hour......... INSANE

They would fire us immediately if they ever caught us taking money. Personal training isn't what it used to be. The old gym I was at in a different city didn't take any part of what we charged. Those days are over. Personal trainers generate a large revenue, they aren't about to miss out on that. I'm at "the" gym in the area, there isn't anywhere else that's any better. It's very frustrating, like I said I'm in Arkansas.

I didn't realize you are actually employed by the gym itself. There is no way a personal trainer will ever make good money by working for a gym. PT's have to do it solo.

I asked one of the dudes who trains people at my gym how much would it be for him and I to have a week of sessions together. It would be five, 1 hour sessions, M-F. He told me it would be $330 for the week which I was kind of blown away by. Thats $65 bucks an hour. Personally I thought that was way too expensive but who knows.

In most places and situations, garbage men make a better living. It's a tough business, and with anything else it's location. To make big money you have to be in an affluent area mixed with places where there's a revolving door of ppl who think theyre going to be the next big model/actor/actress. Miami, NYC, LA. One of my best friends lives out in LA and he charges no less than $65 an hour and up to $100. He has a B.A in Phisiology and Kinesiology, and is a walking anatomy chart. He's ripped 365 days a year. So he has knowledge and looks the part.

He has to give some to the gyms he's affiliated with and usually they will try to rob you blind at first, but when you stay in the game and start getting a giant client basewith good rep, you then have leverage and can negotiate lower gym fees. Which is my friends situation now. Actually he has such a huge client base that he's looking into opening his own gym for the purpose of cutting out the middlemen.

You are right for the most part about that! There are 3 trainers at the gym I'm at now that are making 6 figures. It is based on what we bring in quarterly. We are capped at 70%. I'm stuck at 50% because people in the midwest/south are afraid of someone who actually looks like they workout, I fucking hate this place in terms of training.

I hate places that have trainers that aren't in great shape. A lotta places like some of the golds and other corporate gyms have trainers who look like shit.

That shit drives me nuts. I'm the only dude trainer at my gym that looks like they have ever touched a weight. There are 2 female trainers who are stronger than both of the other guy trainers. It's absolutely ridiculous. One of them was an olympic distance runner and the other one is just kind of there. It makes me sick to my stomach. They are clueless about weight training.

I run 2 gyms and my trainers make from 30,000 to 90,000 the ladies make more ,guys tend to scare away the ladies(who buy most of the training)
