Has anyone here ever served in the Peace Corps or know someone who has. My Mother told me today that she wants to do a tour in the Peace Corps. She is CEO of a corporation...retired and wants to do something to make a difference with her life. I think she feels country clubs, golfing all the time, and just spending are not her thing anymore.

Sounds like my Mom...always giving everything she has to help everyone else despite how people have treated her. I'm very proud of her but the Peace Corps is a big deal. :(

Thoughts.. :)

Oh...and to all the obsessed republicans who love to take cheap shots at me, please save it to another thread and the nasty karma... if you even have an ounce of maturity in you. This thread involves my Mother.

I dont know any one thats in it but your mom sounds like a great woman:)

That sounds like something I would like to do someday as well if I have the means to be able to take a year off from my normal job.

I dated a chick that was in the Peace Corps. I know, it may sound unexpected knowing my online persona, but it's true. She had a blast and saw the world.
But as for older women, I don't know if I would advise of it.
Tell your Mom I said HI! :Chef: :tuc:

I think that she needs to make sure that she's healthy enough to do this without making any health concerns worse. There are a lot of things that she could do to help without joining the peace corps.

Your mom sounds like her daughter. :)

The peace corps go everywhere. not sure if they can pick and choose assignments, but they do humanitarian work all over the world. takes a special person to give of themselves in this way. your mom must be a wonderful person. wish her luck from me.

Peace Corp is a tough job. I don't know if I could do it.

No, wait.

I couldn't do it. No payback.

My Mom is awesome. I guess I just need to learn more about it. The first things that went through my mind are her safety and will she have an internet connection to e-mail.

I had a hard time typing this thread without getting tears in my eyes...it's so far away.

Just wondering. Is the Peace Corps strictly an American organization, or is it international? I don't hear much of it around here.
By the way Kudo's to your Mom for being in a position to be able to do this, and want to. It seems a lot of times the people with the most are the least likely to give. & the people with the least are the most likely.

You need to get her involved in saving marine animals with you. :dolphin:

She says she wants to use her success in business to train people and also work with children. Her wheels are spinning on how to best corporate sponsor the work I love though. :dolphin: :)

i think the work YOU do with marine animals is amazing star!

your mom, as stated above, sounds like a great person like her daughter. That is awesome that she wants to give up her time that she can use to lounge and spoil herself with to go out and work to help others. i don't know much about the peace corps but the little i know is that i heard it can be a very rewarding experience. Whatever she decides to do, give her my best wishes. Let us all know how it goes when she signs up! or if she decides to do something else. Like others have said, if she feels the peace corps are NOT for her she can be part of many other ways to help the world. Especially since she's "well-to-do" since she is a CEO :verygood: ;)

so goodluck mommy starfish!

and star keep up your good work helpin our marine animals! we often forget the great job you and your co-workers do! :rose:

I have a suggestion, see if she would be interested in working with a shelter for abused women. She could help get them training so they can become self sufficient, and do something to help the children. :)

That way she can help others and you wouldn't be so worried about her. Bcause I know you, and you would worry about her day and night,

Hey...bbo79

They have openings in different parts of the world and you apply for specific jobs you can contribute with. Right now she is looking into going to Eastern Europe.

Thanks for the compliment. I'm glad I actually have the spine to go out and do the kind of work I believe in instead of just being a talker or taking cheap shots at someone trying to make the world a better place. I never want to be like that...NEVER

My Mom joining the Peace Corps was a little unexpected though...lol

I will be asking her tons of questions..yikes!

My good friend joined the peace corp, had no control were he went...ended up in the capital of Mongolia for 2 years :worried:
he liked it though, smoked cheroots and drank yak milk

I just asked my Mom if she could drink yak milk...lol

She said she may have too. :worried:

Excuse me Ms. Starfish ma'am, I'm not a republican and Im not taking a cheap shot so I assume I can answer.

Two of my aunts did 2 "tours" in the peace corps. They both ended up doing time in south america and then in Africa. Your mom has to realize that there is a difference between helping people out at a food drive every week and spending a year or two in some 3rd world country. If she's lead a rather sheltered life then honestly the shock of what she will see just might be too much for her, ma'am. It sounds romantic on paper, but its like comparing jumping off of a diving board to jumping out of an airplane, ma'am.

Um, since it was about your mom I typed out an honest, well thought-out reply.

My 2 aunts really were in the peace corps, and from what they told me its not for everyone. You know your mom better than I do, so if you think that the locations, the sites, etc will shock her and therefor she will not enjoy it, then its not for her. If you think they can handle being in a completely desolate area, then tell her to go for it.

Either way take some valium.

You can stop replying to this thread. I asked for it to be locked now that you showed up.

You are psycho and a waste of time to even try to speak with.

Good-bye for the millionth time!

Im wondering if now's not a good time to explain to her that theres no such thing as a starfish, and that it's technically called a "seastar."

You know there is a way of offering advice without being condescending, especially if it was a true offer of advice. :)

She knows that.

Of course if you knew anything about her you wouldn't treat her the way you do.

Yeah....Big man..I do know that. I've also tried to get my account name here changed a ton of times and it never happens. Jellyfish are also really called sea jellies.

I dont know how else I could have typed that out, I did my darndest to make it as honest and un-assholish as possible. Maybe big4life can explain the verbage that I used that fucked me over on this one.

Big...dont worry about it. I asked for this thread to be locked. He can make his cheap shots at me in his karma and other threads. What a life mr internet badass has.

Yes, answering your question in an honest yet polite manner was definately a low blow. God has already closed the books on me getting past the pearly gates.

I don't think he was being disrepectful either, Starfish. Sounds like some bad blood. You're still my favorite, so don't worry...lol :p

My nextdoor neighbor was in the Peace Corps in Thailand a lonnggg time ago. That's where he met his wife. He said it was an eye-opening experience. He didn't regret it at all.

75th: given the bad blood between you and starfish youre simply going to need more tact in your posts regarding her. So although taken at face value your post makes assumptions regarding someones mother, the fact that it is starfish's mother raises it to another level. Thats just the way it is.

Starfish: Quit being so sensitive when someone raises valid, intelligent, pertinent points, EVEN IF its in a rather untactful or insensitive manner. Try to focus on the message, not the messenger.

That is all for you two.

my best friend quit his life here and joined the Peace Corps.

hes been selected to help out some Ceramic Company in Peru. He lives in the dryest climate hes ever been in. Smack in the desert. Very Very poor country. Surrounded by disease and crime.

Hes has to be there for 3 years. So far 1 year has passed since ive seen him.

He has an online blog so i get a play by play of his experience there day to day.

No fuckin way could i do it after reading the shit talks about.

You're a camel, of course you can do it.

Starfish has a very big heart and her mother is an extraordinary woman.

He circles around this place just waiting to give me red karma...how pathetic is that...does giving red karma make you feel like a big man 75th?

I'm sick of him. He seriously needs to take his obsessive anger issues somewhere else.

As little time as I have to spend on this board there is no reason why the guy cannot ignore me or the few threads I make.

He can fuck off now that he decided to get on his cheap shots in a thread involving my mother...and no I will not back down.

And before anyone calls me an uptight bitch...I could easily platinum bomb the crap out of the guy with my karma...give him red...all I want the guy to do is mature past preschool and IGNORE ME.

Im still wondering if anybody at all can explain what was wrong with what I posted?

It doesnt have to be seastar, anybody letting me know what cheap shots were involved can jump in here, because based on the dozens of messages Ive recieved the consesus was that I wasnt out of line.

superdave said:
How often does he red you?
Whenever she reds me. Im not a big believer in distributing karma.
