Parallel Universes

Do they exist?

An interesting concept that I can expand upon when I have time a bit later, but the short answer is we'll never know.

I'm familiar with some of the multiverse concepts in theoretical physics: the bubble universe thing and similarsuch, but this is an area of science where we as humans in this dimension and universe will never be able to show (prove) that there exist universes outside of our own. This is known as the anthropic principle, in which there is the strong anthropic principle (SAP) and the weak anthropic principle (WAP), and another one or two that haven't gained the popularity of the SAP and WAP.

For more information about this concept, I highly recommend glancing through this article on the anthropic principle.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthropic_principle

It basically states, "Assuming some possible universe would be capable of supporting intelligent life, some actual universes must do so, and ours clearly is one of those." with the clause that any universe that would not be capable of supporting human life would not be accessable to us.

I'm going to make the assumption that you got this idea of multiverses from your interest in the popular DC comic series. Here's a page that links you to both scientific multiverse concepts as well as the DC concepts which you are probably more familiar with:

Hope that helps,

thanks for the feedback. You ever saw Sliders?

LOL, yep, my dad and I both watched that series when it was out.

I'm more of a fan of the Richard Dean Anderson-era Stargate, though. And of course, Star Trek: TNG, as there was a lot of interesting ideas and concepts based in real science on that show (aside from some writer 'oops', like the baryon sweep of the ship episode, lol). There's actually a technical manual book for the show, giving specifications for ST-based technology. Of course, much of it is theory (or made up, or BS, or...), but surprisingly, it's more realistic than one might imagine.
