paint can disposal

i am getting rid of a utility shed on my property with about 12 cans of old dry paint. for environmental reasons you are not supposed to throw paint away in trash.

how do i get rid of old cans of paint? should i drop off at local landfill? are there recycle centers for paint? do you have to pay to discard?

glennds i liked throwing them on the fire

call a local homedepot or lowes , they should be able to give you instructions on how to dispose of them properly.

Are they latex or enamel paint?

if they are latex , you can just throw them away, if not they need to go to a hazmat recycle center. (i work hazmat sometimes at work, so i know someshit )

thanks hotzie, for the good info. will look. guess i could just throw them out and noone would be the wiser...but gotta be socially responsible.

as far sniffing paint, appreciate the suggestion. :) guess i am old but that does not look the least bit fun way to get a buzz. seems like you would just feel sick.

i seriously respect the fact that you will turn them into a recylce center instead of just throwin them out. we gotta look out for our children and our childrens children and so on .

Agreed

hotzie i looked, they are enamel. so gotta bring to a hazmat center. what exactly does that mean? are there companies that accept old paint cans? do you have to pay them. how do i find a local one?

your landfill site should have an area set aside where you can drop off hazardous goods (engine oil/car batteries/paint) and they get rid of it for you

gd may be right. might encourage people to not throw out hazardous materials. most people would not pay to dispose of their trash. they dont care enough.

around here its part of recycling policy

the government subsidises the recycling centre adjacent to landfill (ie the guys who sort out all the trash and pull out anything worth onselling secondhand, or to a recycling plant) but part of that is the responsibility to dispose of hazardous stuff

i always felt sorry for the guys sorting out all the trash, until i found out how much money they made. now i wouldnt feel bad if they stepped on a rusty nail. id be "mofo, that shits part of your job discription! get in your beamer and drive to the doctor!"

update: hotzie called the household hazardous waste transfer facility here in san diego. i had to make an appointment on saturday to bring paint. also gonna dump an old moniter i have had sitting around the house. thanks again for link! :)
