PA State Trooper Academy

Got a call last night from my mom. My brother has been trying to become a state trooper. He took his lie detector test, and they said he didn't pass because he breathed too slow during the test. "You didn't fail, you used a technique." is what they told him. Never before had he taken a lie detector test, and he has nothing to hide. He takes half as many breaths as the "average" person does per minute.

He has to take it again. Maybe he should take a caffeine pill to get his heart going or something.

is it legal to deny someone who doesn't pass a lie detector test??

Those things have never been legally sanctioned as carrying weight in any court of law.

If his sole denial is a lie detector test -- he should sue them. The government and it's witch doctor methods.

Yes they have. Maybe not in all states.

It's horse shit. Failed just because he uses air more efficiently than the other applicants.

Times have changed. Especially due to so much public outcry against "dirty cops" to create this perception (like you displayed) that all caps are bad over-zealous corrupt pieces of dirt (which makes it seem like criminals must be guardian angels).

As a result..

at least for the LAPD -- even one drug possession, bad credit, too many speeding tickets, lie on a polygraph, etc. etc. will disqualify you from enlisting.

You pretty much have to be a beaver cleaver now to join most city forces. 50% of the population probably couldn't qualify.

That should appease all those critics.

That's what bother me the most. My brother is a good egg. He'll make a great trooper, and his breathing is holding him back yet some fat slob will get a slot in the class.

He was probably pretty calm. Most people going under a test would be nervous enough to have their heart rate and breathing high. The "Butterflies in the stomach" type of feeling. Your brother must be a cucumber.

He's not easily flustered by figures of authority. I'm hoping he gets this because that's his goal. It's going to suck knowing he could get killed in the LOD though. Guess that's how he felt about my enlisting.
