Our greyhound just fell in the pool

Deadly serious.

My brother owned a racing greyhound, but it was slow and has retired at a young age. Today we took possession of this machine of a dog. I think he's about 2 years old...

He's getting used to the house at the moment:
- He walked into a window. Don't think he'd seen one before.
- We have polished wooden floor boards which were a struggle initially, but he's doing better.
- Even without having to jump, his head can rest on our kitchen benches, although he's quite good about that.
- He's had no real obedience training. Responsive to his name (Cracker) isn't that great, but improving. Despite this, he is the most gentle, placid dog you could imagine. I was absolutely amazed. He's a gentle giant in the truest sense.
- He's never had this much attention before. A house full of people to follow around and greet when they come in the door.
- He hasn't made a sound. Hardly a guard dog :D

But this takes the cake... When we were introducing him to the back yard he spotted our swimming pool. Curious, he walked to the edge and put a foot in, then decided that he'd go for a swim. He definately gave himself a fright and my brother quickly jumped in, not knowing whether or not the dog could swim :D

LOL hope he can swim! It's going to be a long adjustment for him lol Green for you for taking in a dog that needed a family!!

my friends collie did the same thing. They just moved into their new house. She went trotting onto the patio and just kept going foward thinking the pool was a solid surface.

Greyhounds are great. Did your brother adopt him from one of the Greyhound rescues? Even if not, I bet if he contacted one of them, they could give him tips on getting the dog acclimated.

I have a rescued greyhound and it's a great dog. They definitely are awkward at first because they've spent their early lives in shitty enclosed conditions and don't do much else than run.

It was hilarious the first time my greyhound encountered snow. He was going nuts in the stuff. They're definitely calm and loyal dogs. My greyhound seems like such a wimp most of the time, but when he plays with my Irish Setter, he completely dominates him.

Fast Twitch Fiber - your username couldn't be more appropriate given what the dog is like, lol.

2Shy - not adopted as such. He owned him when he raced (slowly :)), so he just collected him from the trainer. We've got lots of information about introducing them into the real world from the program that deals with retired dogs.

The funniest thing is that my girlfriend and I have a pet rabbit. It'd be on for young and old if the two ever met :D

my neighbors had a greyhound. he bit some kid and they had put him to sleep. since he would often bark at me when i was shooting jumpers in the backyard (throwing off my rythym) i was not too upset. they have a mammoth dalmation as well. this dog is quiet. he very well may be lonely.

LOL. sounds like a great dog.

Just make sure you teach him where the steps are in the pool so he knows how to get out if he falls in alone.
