Other than SEO, how would you advertise online?

I have some friends who run online ad stuff and they have 3 million active member accounts they can email.

If you have a great product or site, you cannot beat access to 3 million people

But how targeted are they? For which product? Who says the email are right?

And how much?

You can buy massive lists, doesn't mean they are good.

These are paying members of many sites turned into one list. Updated every week based upon current memberships.

Targets vary from 61,000 members of a dating service to 29000 users of a bank online service.

Sadly, the range is wide in terms of their product wants

So basically the good thing is, they have spent money online.

That's the thing with buying lists, it's risky. I used to purchase lists when I did MLM, then put them into autoresponders.

It was pretty much hit and miss. Plus, you didn't know how many other people were sold the same lists, offering them the same product/similiar product for a better price.

I could have compiled all my lists and then sold that list, ya know? You know these guys personally but most people don't have a contact like that.

These are not lists for sale. My friends write software for many companies and retained the right to collect member information.

They compiled a 3-million member list based upon current paying members of various companies they worked for. Everything from paid dating memberships to online banking accounts.

They created their own mailing system so they can avoid passing around their list. Their system updates itself every week to shake out people who are no longer active members and to add new members.

You mean like spam? Plenty of studies have shown that mass mailings only result (if lucky) in less than 2% of click-thrus. With even less of actual sales.

It's cheap yes -- but usually very ineffective. Targeting, like emailing of YOUR customers is more effective.

Most of my spam gets deleted.

You can always use an affiliate program. So basically you're only paying the affiliate if they make a sale for you. You let them pay for traffic and minimize "some" of your cost.

AdWords and Overture work great IF you put the time into fine-tuning them.

It's very very easy to blow your budget and sell nothing. But if you work it, figure out what people are searching for that want your product, and catch their attention then it works great.

That's the biggest hurdle, is figuring out what works best for you with AdWords.

Initially, only use the search component. It tends to be a little better (in my experience) After you get a grip on that you can try to expand into the content arena.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only "meathead" that's into online revenue.
