OTC anti-depressive?

MrRTTB said:
is there any OTC herb or suppliement that works as an anti-depressive.

Yes! St. Johns and Valerian Root before bed have both worked wonders for my anxiety and depression! You can get them at any natural foods store. I also have a friend who struggled for years with various prescribed anti-depressants, and was able to come off all of them with both St. Johns and Valerian root. PM me if you want.

Green tea extract works wonders for me. Providing a noticeable, positive elevation in mood that lasts all day. Also add some extra B12 and you'll be on the up swing in no time.

Van, interested in the valerian/st johns wort thing...what kinda dosages are you talking about for each, and what brand do you recommend cuz i hear that some brands are not standardized and just use like part of the st johns plant and not the parts which are effective, etc...any halp is appreciated :qt:

just check the side effects on those. i was in the doctors office that had a display of herbal suppliments and what each does. they had these two and what i remember is they had some sides like getting the runs, stuff like that. just check it out but he is right they are for depression.

I usually take three capsules of St. John's Wort extract per day, 300 mg each, standardized to contain 0.3% hypericin during times of moderate stress I'd say... but when I really felt bad (ie. depression, anxiety like you wouldn't believe!!! and I mean constantly feeling sick, vomiting, shaking, can't control emotions) I would double that

Here's the disclaimer: I'm not saying that this is for everyone and drop any meds to try this... but from my experience it really did help! and it was noticeable within days of taking the double dose! It brought me out (and another that I recommended it to) of the lowest point in my life. So do your own research, but i really do think its worth looking into. And even at double the recommended dose I experienced no side-effects, that I could tell. I actually regained my appetite after a few days.

oops... forgot about Valerian Root....300 concentrated and standardized to 0.8 percent valerenic acid is what I take... (note, these volume were recommended to me by my accupuncturist whom I trust and is VERY knowledgable on this subject, so that is where I got these numbers from.... but upon researching these seemed like quality values).... and I usually take 3 pills (900mg total) an hour or so before I go to sleep.

okay... I've personally never experienced any side-effects and no one that I know has... but with the St. johns i believe you should double check with your dr. before adding if already taking other anti-depressants and also I believe it may increase sensitivity to the sun.
Valerian root may be the one to give you the runs so what i did was work my way up to that dosage over a period of a week... but I have never expereinced any side-effects from either of these two, but again, everyone is different!

P.S. the runs would have been a welcomed alternative to what I was going through in my life at that point in time :)
