Orbital or Belt?

I have always maintained that if you are going to sand wood for finishing that you should use a belt sander or do it by hand in the direction of the grain only.

A carpenter I met said that I was full of shit, and that a good orbital with a finer grade of paper will do just fine and I won't run the risk of 'burning' the wood with belt slip.

Advice?

orbital, like the carpenter said, with the final sandind done by hand with a fine grade in the grain direction.

Cool. I was hoping I was off the key on this one.

I agree with the carpenter. The belt sander is for big jobs, the orbital is for finishing.

maybe so but he didnt have to get all shitty about it.

It is all going to depent on the type of wood, coursness of the grain and size of the job. If you're doing finish work on some nice cherrywood cabinets or trim on my job I better not even hear the word belt sander. If you're laying a herdwood floor, if you're my employee and I see you wasting time with an orbital.....YOUR FIRED!!
