I never really studied much history. I figured science and engineering was the future and that history was kind of a way to fill the time for the kids who sucked at math.

Getting searched at the airport was one thing, but the ominous use of the word "sustainable" is shocking. More searches. More patrols. More detention for "outsiders." How does monitoring for terrorist activity relate to hacking and information warfare? Why didn't we do all of this stuff the last time we bombed the crap out of Iraq? It isn't like the threats were any less possible and it isn't like significant buildings in NY (and elsewhere) hadn't been bombed before...
Reading with a skeptical eye, one could draw very objective comparisons to the former Soviet Union's requirement for papers to travel from state to state and restrictions on what kind of media is appropriate.
We are oblivious participants in the desperate ascendancy of a dying empire. Sure, the Bush family (and friends) are in control now. The old man had some spunk. Something must have gone sour in the sperm-egg mix that spawned Dubya and his brothers. The next generation of this family is already riding the small bus to school, if you catch my drift.
The economy sucks, but we are ramping up spending and tax cuts. We are running low on oil, but all this new "security" stuff will surely increase consumption. Am I the only one who fails to see how the math works out?
I keep wondering what can be done to stop all of this. Getting back to the quotes, I think what Jefferson said is more true today than at any other time since WWII. Our freedoms are being challenged by a small, but very well integrated group of people who are manipulating circumstances for their own purpose. Santayana's quote is similarly relevant. Anyone care to look some other examples up to see how they turn out?
I think our only hope is to spread the word, ride this out, and make sure we vote with clear heads during the upcoming election. The Bush family can keep the $600 check. I'd rather get through the airport without a strip search.
