Opinions on Laminate Flooring

It's easy as hell to install once you get the hang of it. Never had any scratches from the dogs which is maby the one nice thing about laminate. When I do it again for my new house, it'll be hardwood just because I prefer the look of it. I don't care how much effort they put into the laminate, I still don't think it looks anywhere near as good as hardwood. Australian cypress is my next choice for my office/den but it's a pretty soft wood so a rug will have to cover a lot of it.

If you have animals and are planning to install it in a large room without some sort of rug, I'd highly suggest laminate because of it's durability. If the animals aren't large and you do plan on putting a little rug down, I'd definitely go with real hardwood.

Hey Tommy,

I got lamainate flooring I bought form Menards to install in my new home. 400 sq feet worth of install. Very easy to install land looks great! Very easy to clean and low maintence. I also own a dog, and he tends to scratch the floor with his nails, but it doesn't leave any marks.

One problem that I encountered was squeks in the floor. I suggest you get rid of floor noise with screws on the base flooring before you being the install. And don't skip on the foam padding.

1st time I installed, and looks professional.

I'll post some pics i fyou are interested.

I have 1000 sq/ft of it in my living room

Mine is 12.2 mm thick , four foot planks 6 inchs wide in whats called homestead pine ( looks like dark cedar )

Not a single person visiting my house has ever guessed it was anything but true hardwood ... mine is v beveled on all 4 sides so it looks exactly like a plank floor you can't tell it's not true hardwood and being so thick it feels like real wood to walk on as well ....

I have a 110 lb male boxer lives inside ... no scratchs at all , the floor is almost bullet proof .. great stuff

i have a yellow lab she's pushing 80lbs going on 2 yrs old

i have 1000 sq ft of this stuff waiting for me to install in my house. just was worried about the durability of the stuff. i have the old pine plank subflooring that could be refinished but the thickness is less than 3/4" before sanding to ge the old orangish stain out of it. the floor squeeks and had cat piss soaked into it. i bleached the hell out of the cat piss and removed all the problem areas but after staining and polying the floor it flakes the poly away. so i bought the laminate.

was playing on installing that over the old pine plank floor after screwing down every other plank. just didn't know about the laminate joints and chipping and scratching. i also have to disconnect the cast iron heaters to put the floor down and then reset the heaters.

I've found the non-beveled edge chip easier then the beveled stuff ...

Then again product quality plays a big role so depends on the manufacture

The worse thing you'll find from a laminate floor is they wear out foot wear like crazy ... woman with nylons real fast ... the surface is make of silicon carbide or aluminium oxide which are the same coupounds use in abrasives like sandpaper .. they are hard as a rock , thats why they are used , but looking under a microscope the fibers stand up like microscopic mountain peeks .. thus it wears out socks and stuff real quickly

Thanx for the " k " bro :)

i got a new brand out called surface source, very similar to traffic master. socks are cheap anyways and women in nylons best be sexy thigh highs

i dont like fake stuff. if i did go with something other than real hardwoods i would at least get the real hardwoods but with a plywood backing.

i decided to go with bamboo. something different and its solid wood. 3/4 inch thick and can be restained over the yrs.

and its a glue down.

some girl asked me why i didnt go with ceramic tile that looked like harwood. i lmao.

whats the point of going with something that looks like wood but doesnt have the real wood feel.

heres a pic, excuse the floor its dirty as hell right now. lol

wtf, old pine planks??

can you restore it? dude dont cover that shit up. it can be beautiful and low maintenance as well.

mine is the 6" planks also but not beveled. main reason i chose this was pricing. i don't want to put to much into a house when i'm already planning on building a new home in the near future.

ok then scratch my above post about restoring the pine although it would add huge value to the house maybe.

yeah i can restore it, i just don't know if the cat piss will ruin all the work i did restoring it though

while your refinnishing it put the damn cat outside. lol. but fater your done the 10 coats of urathane should protect it. laminate will not hold up to cat piss any better.

Lmao
You coudn't wait more than 9 minutes.

Ok.....i laid that crap in my kitchen and it lasted maybe three years.I thought it sucked.Go for tile, its a little more expensive but its not hard to lay.

Unless your home is the one you plan on staying in for a long time, you're wasting your money putting in expensive real hardwood. I put in laminate flooring throughout my main floor at less than half the price of the cheaper hardwood options. It looks almost as good and is durable as hell. I have two small children and they have been unable to make a mark on it. I'll be moving to a larger home in the next year that I plan on staying in for a while. I will invest my money in that home rather than one I know I won't be keeping.

In terms of resale value, the difference you would get because you had real hardwood vs. laminate would be negligible.

My sister put in 20k worth of austrailian cyperus ( sp ? ) which is true hardwood and site finished ( meaning it's sanded down and finished once layed ) ..

WELL ..... They have a cockapoo which happens to be the olny damn dog in the world that walks on it's toenails !!!! There floor was fucked in the first few weeks ..

Sanded down and refinished ...

Months later dishwasher blows a gasket .. water sits on floor .. floor turns white

sanded down and refinished ....

winter roles around , wood burning stove for some reason decided to sneaze hot ambers across the living room floor ...

sanded down and refinished ...

now the floor in my opinion looks like shit because of all the dips and valleys created from sanding and refinishing not to mention the amount of material has now totaly masked the gain of the wood so it looks plastic " PLUS " each time the entire main floor including bedrooms had to be done as there was no place to cut off the floor ... plus they had to move out for 2 weeks each time

Any of those above conditions on a laminate floor could have been repaired in single day by removing the effected panels and replacing them .. very easy to do

Pro's and con's both ways ...

Enginered hardwood is a step up from laminate and in my opinion even a step up from hardwood at a fraction of the cost

Yep....I am redoing a condo but don't plan on living here forever. Everytime, I go into a flooring store they push these beautiful hardwood floors on me. I just would not get the money back.

well it is a selling point whether you see actual dollars or not.

I'm redoing the entire condo...So I hope the new kitchen. bathroom, counters ect will make-up for the "fake" hardwood floor. There is actually new travertine flooring here now. I just like the "look" of wood and the travertine scratches if you dont baby it.

The view here is my selling point :p

easy to install, but does not add a lot of value to your home and it doesn`t look as good as the good stuff...

If you're in the 300-500 thousand range, you might squeeze $5000 more out with a really good hardwood. Of course, it would cost at least that much more to put in so you've gained nothing.

If you're in a higher tax bracket, yeah maybe you could pull a little more. But when you're talking about a house that's $800000, what difference would a resale of an additional, say 15 g's make? Anyone in that price range doesn't give much of a shit about cost anyway and wouldn't be in the market for laminate :)

No pets, no kids. I installed mine like 5 months ago. So far, so good. No scratches, looks awesome. I installed around 750 sq ft. You just need to be very focused and detail oriented to work on it.

hahaha@ all those numbers. speculation with numbers is pointless especially since you live in canada and i live in texas. maybe canadians dont care eh?

its a selling point.

Sponge, do you have a rhinosceros head on the wall in your billiard room?

lol, where'd you see that from that pic of that girls ass. i wanna see. i lost all those pics when i rebooted my computer recently. i need to find that thread.

but no, its not a rino's head. lol

Who has it, any problems, how long did you have it, have pets?

Have it in 2 bedrooms + the kitchen....

LOVE IT....the only place I'm not "thrilled" with it is the kitchen as it gets so dirty there & it's not wearing as well as I'd like....The constant cleaning of it seems to be wearing it out quickly....but it IS almost 10 years old and it's not a brand name like Pergo or anything....

And, yes, I have pets....they are easier I think to clean than linoleum & look nicer.....

No, from this picture:

http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/showpost.php?p=5953987&postcount=9

I'm not sure what that table really is, but it reminds me of the billiard table and the "Billiard Room" on "The Beverly Hillbillies". They ate their formal meals on the pool table, and thought the rhino head on the wall was a "bill-i-ard".

My Mother and my Father in law has the laminate hardwood in their house. It looks great and i have plans on putting it in my living room soon.
You need to go with a quality brand like "Pergo" flooring. Its more expensive but they have a 30 year warranty.

I've been told "Quick Step" is an excellent brand too. :)

It's FANTASTIC if you have dogs. You don't have to worry about their nails scratching it up or anything. I love that my floor always looks perfect and isn't all scratched up. I have a fortune's worth of custom hand build red oak cabinets and the flood looks 100% natural with them.
