Operation "Odyssey Dawn" = Gulf War III?

Nicky, not Barry. Sarkozy is the points man this time.

Nicky didn't fire-off 124 Tomahawk cruise missles and dispatch B2 bombers. Those planes took off from US soil. Does France have a base here or something?

France ran the first air raids over Lybia on Saturday.

Doh!

So if GW had just let the very first soldier that crossed into Iraq be a Brit, it could have been Tony Blair's war.

Talk about an opportunity missed...

But on the upside, that means the Arab League supported it for at least 36 hours. I credit Barry's coalition-building skills.

I suppose if we had waited longer than 36 hours after the Arab League requested that the UN establish a no-fly zone, Khadafi could have finished the job of crushing his opposition, and there'd be no need for intervention. Crisis averted.

But then you'd just complain that Obama is a weak leader who can't act decisively to deploy the military when it's needed. You're going to take a contrary position no matter what Obama does.

I haven't said what I'm for and against in this situation.

What I do know is this:

1) When presented with a very similar set of circumstances, Barry made some very Bush-esque decisions.

2) The die is cast and there's not really either president could/can really do about it at this point.

3) If Quadafi stays in power, we'll have a newly re-enregized madman in the region.

4) If Quadafi goes down, it will be a race between civil war/failed state and the establishment of a democracy.

5) But (3) and (4) were similar situations presented to Bush. He got a few bad breaks and we've been trying to fix Iraq and Afghanistan for years.

6) I hope we don't have to ask Lybia to the list of places to fix.

And let's not overlook the fact that this is nation-building, pure and simple.

Robert Gates said:
"We agreed to use our unique capabilities and the breadth of those capabilities at the front of this process, and then we expected in a matter of days to be able to turn over the primary responsibility to others," Gates told reporters traveling with him to Russia. "We will continue to support the coalition, we will be a member of the coalition, we will have a military role in the coalition, but we will not have the preeminent role."
