Opening a Gym...

Hey all this board seems like the most appropriate place to post this, so I'll post here. I was looking for some insight in opening up a gym in my area. I would prefer to go franchise such as Gold's or Bodyplex as it seems that the smaller gyms get gobbled up around here. I know I'd have to lease an area, but what are start up costs like? I plan on catering to all types of athletes....from people who are just starting to people who compete. Any info. would GREATLY be appreciated!!

You need to talk to BIGDHO. He has his own gym and could help you greatly with the costs and expectations.

Well I can tell you if you want to buy a franchise like golds your talkin about paying out alot of personal capital up front just for the name......aroung 1 million after its all said and done. But if you have the money and enough population to support it then its worth it. I opened an independent gym called Ultimate fitness in a town around 40000 people and it is going good. One thing I will tell you is go see a man called Thomas Plummer, he is a professional counselor for gym owners and will put you on the right path for everything from billing software to equipment, also read his books and tapes there is a wealth of info there.

Wow 1 million to start a gym?! :worried:

A up scale golds gym. You can start a independent gym like I did for around 250000 if you lease you building. Ive got a 8000 square foot building in a strip mall, with a full line of freemotion, epic, hammer and some flex equipment.cardio is nordictrac with plasma screen tvs built into the machines along with a city blends juice bar, aerobics including spinning and body pump and a small pro shop for around 250000.

Wow great info you all! Hey bigdho, do you ever worry about franchise gyms trying to buy you out or takeover?? 250,000 doesn't sound as bad as 1 million, and after looking at World Gym, that doesn't sound bad either. So basically for Gold's, you're paying more for name recognition, correct?

Do you ever find that running a gym takes the fun out of being at the gym?

I've always thought that it would be interesting, and I even have the perfect area in my city. There is only one small yuppie gym in this part of town, plus the Y downtown. It gets great traffic from people going into and out of town with very little competition. Plus the largest gym, Gold's, has just invested a ton of money at their other sites so they wouldn't be looking to expand into this area any time soon.

No..........the town is to small, it wouldnt support a gym of that size. World gym is a option, we looked into that as well but opted to go independent in the end.

With Golds you pay big time for the name. Thats the major draw back to buying them.

I was worried about that (Do you ever find that running a gym takes the fun out of being at the gym?) but come to find out for me it has helped my motivation and my diet and training has been more consistant.
