One week after loading Norton anti-virus....

and making sure it worked perfectly due to the fact that 'live update' was incapacitated a few months ago......I find that:

Auto Protect has been disabled

Email Scanning has been disabled

I've got a brand new virus.

Dang....in one week :)

Norton sucks. I use spybot and ad-aware.
It may not be Norton.

I always get instant messages from Microsoft after re-installing Norton. How very interesting.

I wonder how many hackers can incapacitate Norton? And do it within a week of install.

I got a six pack

Anything to do with Microsoft is bad. Explorer and other Microsoft internet programs have so much spyware its crazy. Everytime after I use explorer I run spybot search and destroy, and it finds about 200 critical errors on my PC. Explorer is constantly downlaoding shit on my PC. Ad-aware also detecs known threats and lets you block them when they are trying to download it onto your PC.

You are too paranoid. There aren't any hackers attacking you.
care to explain this frequent message as I am logging off:

"Others are logged into your computer. Logging off may cause them to lose data."

This is not a network computer either.

I just got that message from my laptop. It isn't on the internet in any way right now. I just woke it up and I was at the windows login screen, and I hit turn off, and then shut down. The person logged on is me.

I had the same problem. Its spyware. I had someone come over and fix my puter. They installed Spybot and Ad-Aware. It works fine now.

did you get norton internet securities also? if you didnt get personal firewall you might as well throw it out the window. run norton anti virus, norton personal firewall, then download adaware and spybot. that will keep you clean.

some programs create lower level users to keep them from having administrator privelidges. this may not be the case, but is possible.

lol @ tboy's paranoia....
very funny

The "paranoid" label is so very interesting. Like so many others, there is little one can do about it.

IN 1998...my medical report was that I had no paranoia whatsoever. That was after a year of chats with a medical school professor on medical ethics.

But hey...if you think its funny...then laugh away.

Sure they can - especially if you are logged in with admin permissions.... which I'm guessing you are.
Not sure what you mean here.

I want a setting that does not allow a damn thing.

I'll just a buy another computer when this thing sinks, that one will not be connected to the internet.

Serious pain in the ass.

Can't one just get a $400 router or something?

I downloaded a firewall program that detects everyone trying to logon to my ports, it flashes a question if I want to let them I always say no.
I have a spyware program that I run periodically and it found a bunch of spy programs the first time, then I put up the firewall and not one program has been turned up when I run a spy check, no viruses either. Both were free downloads. I dont know if there is anything else going on thats not being detected but it has eased my mind.

You have to think layers of defense. Some easy steps for you...

Router/NAT device - the external and first layer.

Software firewall on computer - Zone alarm, etc.

Don't use software that says "fuck me" to script kiddies. In other words... dont' use Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express. Use Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird instead.

Anti-virus software - Norton, etc.

At this point, for your level, you've put up a good passive/ semi-active defense.

Now, don't do anything stupid to let bad software install itself.

All can easily be subverted if malicious code is easy to run on your system.

DON'T RUN A LOGIN THAT HAS ADMIN PERMISSIONS.

Step through the link - create an XP login that doesn't have admin permissions.

WHY? Because software will not easily install if it isn't run with Admin permissions.

You don't do these things.... expect to be zombied real effin quick.

How about we incarcerate hackers instead.

That's not gonna solve YOUR problem. :D

There is little I can likely do about MY problem.

Sometimes....the greater the defence, the more it entices those who can overwhelm anything.

Iraq, for example, was attacked because it was perceived to be well defended. We thought they were hiding something.

They would have been better off with almost no military.
