STERLING, Colorado (AP) -- Toys placed in a drop-off box for charity at a Wal-Mart wound up back on the store shelves after a mix-up that frustrated organizers.

With 10 days left until the end of the annual Toys for Tots drive for the Logan County Chamber of Commerce, organizer Susan Kraich said she was back at square one.

But by late Wednesday, things were looking up -- with $425 worth of toys in hand for delivery.

The roller-coaster charity drive began its wild ride over the weekend.

"I've been keeping an eye on that box every time I went to Wal-Mart, and was so excited as it slowly began to fill. Over the weekend I heard that it was nearly full, so I went to pick it up. I was devastated when I found it empty," Kraich said.

Kraich said she complained to store management, but was told the store would only replace the items she knew for a fact were in the box. She was only able to replace three toys.

"I don't know how I am suppose to prove what was in there ... I thought since Wal-Mart agreed to place the box, they were agreeing to keep an eye on it," she said.

Wal-Mart manager Brad Barritt said the Toys for Tots organizer he met, whose name he could not remember, was instructed that donated items needed to be wrapped in Wal-Mart bags to ensure the items had been purchased.

Kraich, who works for First America Cash Advance, denied ever receiving any such instruction.

Since store officials didn't know if the gifts had been bought or not -- and no video camera was trained on the box -- Barritt said he decided to place all the toys back on the shelves for resale.

Barritt noted that the retailer is a regular benefactor to area clubs and organizations, donating more than $50,000 annually. Wal-Mart even offered a $1,000 cash grant to Toys for Tots this year.

"Not that that has anything to do with this situation. Only to say that, as a corporation, we are very community minded. I'd hate to see a discrepancy over a few toys change that perception in the eyes of the public," Barritt said.

You don't rip off the toys for tots barrel. If that had been some punks stealing the toys, people would have been screaming for blood!!!

I want the store manager's balls nailed to the wall!!!!!!

You just don't steal from kids, especially at Christmas.    :destroy: :destroy:

uh, it's not like he did it on purpose.

Maybe he didn't do it on purpose but he did it!

I don't think "a few toys" (as in the managers words) are going to break WalMart. WalMart should have never touched those toys.

I'm with big on this one!

how was wal mart supposed to know the toys had been bought? what would stop someone from grabbing a cart, filling it with toys, and dumping them in the box?

i'm sure wal-mart will do something to make amends. how come it doesn't make the news when they donate $50,000 annually?

he didnt do it on purpose. the kids will probably still get their toys.

?

The barrels are on the other side of the cash register. You have to pay for them, before you can pass by.

At the very least they should have placed a sign saying that the toys needed to be in a bag. Most people probably only bought one or two toys to put in. They probably had other stuff in the bag, so they stick the toys in the barrel and keep the bag.

I wonder what happened to the toys that a friend of mine dropped off at the store by the gym? They were not even from Wal Mart. They just dropped them off there because it was convenient.

I know in the article they said they didn't have a security camera on the box but if a security camera can catch a woman beating the hell out of her kid in a parking lot they would definitely notice someone dumping unpaid for toys in a donation box. That's my opinion but I still think WalMart could have handled it better.

oh ic......the sentiment and actualy toys will now be lost forever

hopefully walmart will buy toys in excess of the quality lost. but mistakes happen :(

and it wasnt like it was the whole nationwide walmart chain did it, it was just one store

One store got caught. If it is company policy, how many others have gotten away with it?

i will never complain about walmart... i received a 2000 gran from them in the fall at one club... and after i transferred they hooked me up again for 1500... far better than any other company around.

Damn, and i thought i had a boring life, who really gives a shit? Sterling Colorado is in the middle of fucking nowhere. I am suprised they even have a walmart there.

Walmart sells a lot of junk. It is very hard to find true quality there. Whoops...guess that says something about Walmart customers.

The reason I go there at times is because the odds are good that they carry something that will work and the prices are good. It is still junk though.

This is not about how many toys he put back on the shelf. It is about something called principle and respect. He took toys that people bought for children who would have no Christmas without this charity, and put them back. He not only stole from those children who would get nothing for Christmas without this charity, but he stole from Marines who could be dying in some God forsaken land, six months from now.

he also taught the toys for tots chick a lesson... dont leave YOUR job up to someone else to do... keep an eye on YOUR STUFF!!! if i put a money jar on the counter of a mcdonalds and left for a month, guess what? it will be gone.. common sense.

So if I rent the organization you work for a building, then I realize I can get more from another tenant. I find a loophole in the contract to throw your group out and move the new tenant in, it's ok? I mean it is legal, maybe shady, but still legal.

I agree. Their clothes suck. You get what you pay for there. Made of cheap, thin material. I just bought a mustache trimmer there a couple of weeks ago and it was a piece of shit. It butchered my moustache and I had to shave it off completely. As a matter of fact, if I can get motivated, I'm going later tonight to take it back. That damn place is crowded even at this hour.

I fucking hate walmart. I have to go there at like 1:00 in the morning or else i feel like i went through some wierd dimension warp into Mexico.

in english i think you meant to say "if i rent the building your organization is locaated in and i realize that i can get more from another tenant and i find a loophole in the contract and i throw your org. out and allow the new tenant to move in it's ok?"

dude, where the fuck did you come up with that? first, we own all of our buildings except one, and that is located in a school. second, read what i wrote again, jesus christ...

maybe you want to make some sense here and say something about leaving something of yours in my building and expecting me to be responsible for it... oh, wait, thats what the lady did and look how that turned out... she fucked up, she knows it... and it looks bad on her.. so why not turn to the news and spin this thing around and make walmart the big mean corp. look like a nasty company?

now, when you reply.. make sense.

Looks like a run-of-the-mill fuck up to me. Wal-Mart made about 2 billion dollars last year...they certainly don't need the extra revenue from a few Barbie dolls, or whatever.

And yeah, thier clothing sucks for the most part, but the other stuff they carry is pretty decent. I buy groceries and bathroom stuff there...costs like 1/2 what it would elsewhere.

Yeah, I guess some of ya'll are right. So what if Walmart screwed over some kids this Christmas, they help out other kids, so I guess it all balances out. If I worked with kids, I would be hoping that they don't screw over my kids next.

I know one person who will not step foot into another Walmart store. I don't care if they are giving stuff away. I know they won't miss me, but at least I will know that I have taken a stand for something that I believe in.
