Olympic steroid scandal

There's a news story out there today where olympic athletes were busted for steroid use, the largest organized use of steroids involving coaches and chemists and athletes.
They were using a designer steroid called tetrahydrogestrinone .

Anyone ever heard of that one?? New one on me, sposed to be similar to trenbolone, but undetectable until someone sent a used syringe with drug in it and made accusations SO they retested all of the samples and several came back positive.

I looked up the structure of gestrinone. It does look a lot like tren but is 17-alkylated with an acetylene function and instead of the normal 13-methyl group, it is 13-ethyl group. If the acetylene function was fully hydrogenated to a ethyl group, it would look a lot like a 17-ethylated tren, which should behave just like 17-methyl tren. I bet that is tetrahydrogestrinone.

Can any of you guys explain how the analysis is done? Just something quick, nothing elaborate. I'm guessing that the way I thought analysis was done is WAY off.

Analysis of what? The THG in the syringe or the analysis of THG levels in athletes?

There are any number of valid and accurate ways to analyze the contents of the syringe. I would guess a simple urine analysis would catch it in athletes. THG is likely taken orally as it is 17-alkylated so there should be high levels in the urine. They probably just shot a urine sample onto a HPLC and matched the peak to an authentic standard.

so.. anyone ever hear of this compound outside of this event? Wonder how it stacks up to tren/test/d-bol and the other common compounds we all know about?
