For those interested in origins of 5x5 they have a book on the history of Doug Hepburn as well as Reg Park's original 5x5 training course. Tons of other neat stuff too. So glad some of this stuff is coming back into print, I remember seeing whole books devoted to the technique of the bent press (yes that's not bench press). A whole lot of history and neat stuff.

Strength & Bulk Training
for
Weight Lifters & Body Builders
by Reg Park
Mr. Universe 1951, 1958, 1965

Any time the conversation turns to muscular bulk and power, the world famous name of Reg Park comes to mind. Reg brought physical development to a new high by winning the NABBA Mr. Universe three times and bench pressing over 500 lbs.! Park was the idol and mentor of the great Arnold Schwarzenegger! This a modern reprint of Park's classic course detailing the original 5x5 training system, weight progression, diet, rest, record keeping, sticking points, limit poundages, single attempts, boredom, injuries and stress, attitude and exercises that Reg used to build his awesome size & strength. The course includes three different training routines for weight lifters and three for body builders. It demystifies how to make steady continual progress. An absolute must if you want huge gains in muscular bulk and power now! A classic course, fully illustrated.
Only $ 15.95 + $ 6.00 S&H; $ 12.00 S&H international.

Nice links. Hermann Goerner sounds like quite the stud.

I'd be interested in Reg Park's write-up after reading McCallum's Keys to Progress. LoL He's enamored of Reg and has almost convinced me to start using BTN presses.

Sweet, I can learn how to establish the mind-muscle connection old school style with the Muscle Control series and how to target the inner pecs with Muscle Moulding. And what order would be complete without Muscular Arms and Shoulders? ;)

Very interesting stuff as always, madcow.

You do realize that those make you sterile and cause dementia right? Plus, I have a friend who got the clap. Not worth it bro.

BTL* deads, however, actually will make you sterile.

*between-the-legs

I know this wasn't the point you were trying to make with the post, madcow, but I'm still amused by the seeds of modern bodybuilding voodoo in some of these books' claims. e.g.
How to get those huge muscular arms and shoulders that you have admired on the Stars.
The most effective and result producing course in existence. Many have gained 30 lbs. of muscle in one month by following this course. Some have gained 100 lbs. of muscle in a year by using the methods described in this course.

So....wait a minute.....you're saying a guy like Reg Park got big muscles, was both strong and looked good, trained with less than 8 reps and did so in a progressive fashion, and he used mainly compound lifts, AND all before American's even knew what a steroid was????

I almost wish steroids didn't work so they couldn't validate the success of ingenious concepts like "3 on, 1 off", separate "quad" and "ham" days, and the power of Zubazz and fanny packs.

BTW, Proto....ANYTHING behind the neck is very, very, very dangerous and will no doubt ruin the shoulders and cripple you, STAY AWAY.....instead load up a Hammer Press machine with 6 plates/side (you know it is good because you load metal plates onto it) and perform reps with 1/16th of an inch range of motion (full range will tear your rotator cuffs).

It would be a change of catastrophic proportions in BBing. I doubt that BBing ever would have become nearly as popular. You can assume most of the mags wouldn't be there and those that did would have reasonable and likely pretty daarn savy training. The machines wouldn't have lasted nearly as long. OL would probably be a much more significant sport in this country. Would save a lot of guys some psychosis based on rediculous self-image expectations. Personal training would be a whole different deal if the fitness industry would even still look the same. Goodbye supplement racket although it would still exist to some degree.

Staggering to the mind. Probably do the world a whole hell of a lot of good. AIDS patients would have some issues though.

"His course describes in detail how, by use of mental concentration, you can develop and gain individual control of every muscle in the body."

And this is way before No Xplode

Madcow....How the hell are you man? I have a lot of catching up to do with you.

Care to send an old friend a way to get in contact with you? I haven't been around for a couple of months but when I was here I was trying to get somebody, anybody that knew how to contact your brainy butt.

I hope you have been doing well my friend,
Cg

Sent you a PM - tried to find you a while ago. Congrats on the birth of your son (or daughter but I think I heard it was a boy).
