Okay, so now you're big. But are you "fit"?

Personally I train for sport snd not just getting huge. If some of tou guys are in the military, etc. you must have to run the beep test relatively often. I usually weigh in around 255 at 10-11% bf and run a little over 12 on the beep test.

Heh, explain the beep test to me......sounds interesting....

It's basically a test of your fitness level. You have a measured off area that is 20m in width and then you have a tape that has stages that are a minute long each. Within each stage the beeps get closer and closer, forcing you to pick up the pace until you're completely burnt out. I believe each stage adds one additional beep, cutting down the time you have to cover the 20m. It's a fantastic test to measure your fitness for anyone because in the end whether your fit or not you're completely spent and have a concrete guage in which to compare to the next time you do it.

This is a very subjective idea...Fitness and so forth. It depends on what your training goal is. For serious bodybuiders looking to be remarkably massive the goal isn't "athletic" fitness, it's muscularity at it's peak. Most guys training for all out size for bodybuilding purposes couldn't and shouldn't give a rats ass about thier "fitness" level. Nobody's running sprints on stage in a competition to win points from the judges. Much of this depends on how you define shape. The bigger a bodybuilder gets(muscularity) the better "shape" he gets into if you look at it form a purley anerobic weight lifting standpoint. He is in far better "shape" muscularity wise than a 150 pound stick figure runner. But if you determined "shape" to be how long or far he can run then obviously the 150 pound marathon runner is in better shape. Purely subjective and far too hazy of an idea to really provide a concrete answer. I used to run distance when I was young and now I'm 253 pounds and consider myself to be in far better shape than when I ran. I no longer do cardio of any sort, but at the same time the small little fella on the treadmill can't deadlift an ounce. Every bone in his body would likely snap if he tried to pull from the floor the weight I move. At the same time I'd need supplemental oxygen if I got on his treadmill at 8mph. I still have abs at 10%bf 253 pounds and have never suffered a training injury so to me I am in shape. The body adapts to the training you provide it, so then there are likely many varieties of "shape and fitness" to be relevant to many different individuals.

something I noticed... when I TRIED to go jogging one morning, my shins felt like they were recieving massive impact to them, never happened before BB. I changed shoes, payed attn. to how I landed on my feet... nothing helped.

Then the same day went to play street ball. No pain. got my cardio. decided to play ball for cardio instead. plus I love this game.

Just curious.......

what if the time comes that you actually have to fight? Not just bluff someone with your size, then a lot of you guys would be in big trouble in about a minute and a half. 30 minutes of brisk walking or stepping on a stair stepper is nothing like runnning wind sprints or jogging 2-3 miles. I just like knowing that if it really come down to it, I have the gas to go the distance. Just my two cents.

3 reconstructive knee surguries here, no running for me, I would stand and take my chances. I am working on the being fit though, current stats 6' 210lbs, around 14% bf, getting ready to do a run of fina and winny!

I started playing rugby 3 years ago at around 235 15% BF. I had been a powerlifter and had some decent lifts. I could not run at that weight and severly lacked aerobic conditioning. I could not play effectively whatsover, even though I was the strongest guy out there. 3 years later, I am 210 8-9% BF and can run like a deer and hit like a mack truck. Rugby games are 80 minutes of non stop running, tackling, pushing, rucking- so you must have excellent aerobic and anarobic conditioning. My lifts have gone down, but I look alot better- and the important lifts (for myself) ie. powerclean, have gone up. I presently train not to look good, or be big, but to put bonecrushing hits on dudes on the rugby pitch. i find this much more satisfying then hitting gym pr's.
