It should suck it down the first few days. Put a couple of aspirin in the water...supposed to help with keeping the needles on and not dieing quickly

Usually, we take a drill and drill a bunch of small holes in the base to get water to it quicker...don't know if that is an old wives tale but it seems to have helped in the past.

Keep the base full of water...that is very important.

make sure the cut is fresh and it should be straight across, not angled or V cut...

DO NOT add anything to the water... no aspirin, no chemicals, no nothing...

make sure you have the proper size stand... 1 qt for each 1" base thickness...

just keep water covering the cut... it will draw water as needed... the freshness of the cut is important, as if it gets dry, sap will seal off the intake of the water...

good luck...

Thanks for all help! had it cut at store and was probably in water 1/2 hour later - THis morning looked as though had drank lots of the water - never heard of the aspirin before? Anything to keep it going till 1/8/2006!!
