Ok, Protein Shakes, Do I Need Them?

6(SIC)6

Ok, been working out 1 month. I dont expect to see any gains yet because my bodys still adjusting (although i've seen astonishing strength gains).

Anyway, i'm pretty sure i'm not getting enough Protein, and i know that this is the building block of muscle.

My queston is, should i get some protein shakes? I didn't really want to cos i thought that i could get enough in my diet, but umm, i cant. Now i've heard that they are bad for you in some ways, is this true? And when should i drink these shakes?

Lastly, who of you guys uses protein shakes?

Thanks.

I couldn't do without them, I aim for a least 6 servings of protein per day and there is no way I could get that through food, there just isn't enough hours in the day to eat that many times, plus the calories would be to high overall, a pure whey protein shake has only 100 or so calories in it

I used to use shakes all the time for practically everything

Since then Ive slowly tried to phase them out and replace them with proper decent food like oatmeal, rice (instead of pasta), chicken, honey etc etc

I dont know about anyone else but I have found that with drinking your calories, alot of the calories seem to be lost, wether they just pass straight through the body or what I dont know, but I find I am eating much "less" calories than before and yet I am gaining weight again. Possibly because I have improved the quality of my diet too, but it definately seems to me that some of those liquid calories are not used.

Just a thought

Eat real quality food

Exactly. I try to get 1.5 gr of protien per 1 lb of body weight. And at 220lbs, that would be pretty much impossible without shakes. I take two a day. If I didn't, I'd have to take in probably close to 4000 calories in regular food to match it. Also, I've never heard of a quality protein shake being bad for you at all.

The main bad side to taking protein is that if you take to much it is not absorbed and is stored in the kidneys later turning to calories. If your body doesn't turn it to calories you just shit it out. That's it.....not a bad thing.

I take about 90grams of protein in through P shakes. I weigh 175lbs and I get about 225garms of protein a day total. is that bad that i am getting alomst half of my protein from shakes?

real food is the cest source of protein but if trying to consume 1.5 - 2 grams of bodyweight it can be hard to eat that much food. i use shakes for about 50% of my protein intake. be careful not to take in too much as it will set in kidneys and give you problems. BTW be sure to drink plenty of water.

Stiffler i think that's a decent amount of protein even considering the protein shakes. Many people don't count the protein shakes because they only keep you in an anabolic state for about 1 hour and leave you catabolic after that, versus food can take several hours. Nothing compares to real food i agree. And i'm sure if most of your protein intake came from whey, you'd be more dissapointed in results versus food.

6sic6... what are you trying to say w/ a name like that anway? That you are evil or something? Evil like you enjoy what happened to people last tuesday or what? What exactly are you trying to say w/ a name like that.

RISKY- so are so saying that I am consuming to much P powder?
I get my protein from the Pfactory, I designed it so it was a little slower to digest, this is what it looks like;
20%-CFW
20%-egg white protein
40%-soy protein
20%-milk casinate
each shake I mix with about half a tablespoon of flax oil (3 shakes) and I put in 50-70mg of maltdexatrin in my post workout shake.
so i am consuming about 4 shakes a day w/ 22g per shake.

what are your thoughts on that?
thanks,

no i'm saying i think you're getting a decent amount of protein from natural foods.

You need to consume alot of water, if you are not already. Urine should be clear. Mass quantities of protien can be hard on the kidneys. I drink 1-2 gallons a day, depending on time of year. But it is all I really ever drink Have a Culligan water cooler at home, sweet.

I've only been at this about 2 1/2 months, and I'll just tell you what my trainer told me, which is much the same thing everyone else has said: real food is always better than supplements.

That said, I use 3 shakes a day, but I'm using gainers. Initially, I was doing 2-3 protein/mr shakes a day. At work, it's tough to eat in the morning and in the afternoon, so the shakes are a Godsend. I use the Optimum PowerMass 1000 gainer, and the Optimum 100% Whey protein for a low carb.

My strength gains have been steadily increasing from the beginning, and the results are getting more visible. There wasn't much to see (for me, anyway) in terms of results after 1 month.

Hmmm i thought this might be a problem if my topic was moved to this forum...........

*Sigh*

Theres a band, they are called SlipKnot. A song off they're first album was called (sic). People started to spell sick (sic). Then the band, came up with 6(sic)6 which is their way of mocking the devil and everything he stands for. They are not remotely satanic, they mock all that stupid business.

Now, i joined these forums WAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY before this WTC tragedy, so how exactly could i of known that what would happen did and that people like you would think i'm evil and enjoy what happened?

I beleive you are looking for people to blame for this, dont blame me. And stop looking for trouble.

Okay, this may be too grammatically geeky for the board, but I'm going to post it anyway.

Sic is used editorially, and it means "intentionally so written". Basically, editors use it with quotes to indicate that whatever they are printing is exactly what was said--language and all.

I don't know much about Slipknot, but is it possible that this is what they're referring too? That would make sense with the 6(sic)6 reference, since they're using it to mock the devil.

Looks like the bashing post is gone anyway.

No, if you can eat enough chicken, beef, eggs and other good sources of protein you wont need a protein shake.....i take prolab's whey at the moment, with milk for more protein.
only one serving a day does me.

totally up to you, see how you get on with out it, then if you cant get it from the diet, get some

hope that helped
